Why doesn't anyone make Trap music?

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Well since there is actually a trap thread, might as well post my WIP here for feedback!

Actually that sounded more like dubstep than trap.

Also, what's with the pairing of moombah and trap? I know Dillon Francis does it, but why?

Because these two + dutch house are all about deep bassdrums and high-pitched synths. It's just the same genre with different BPM:
140 halftime - trap
~108 - moombah
128 - dutch house

ph00tbag wrote:On another tone, Trap is Hip Hop. This, you've stated, and I will not dispute. But Hip Hop is EDM. Sure, the artists that were first making it were inspired by Soul, Funk, and Blues. But look further. The artists who made Techno were influenced by Motown. The the artists who first made House were influenced by Disco and Funk. The artists who first made Jungle were influenced by Reggae. That's all well and good for talking about where these genres come from, but EDM is music that is made with sequencers, samplers and synthesizers. Hip Hop falls into this description neatly.

I don't understand it: I've told you that you're totally free to champion pretty much all of EDM as being rooted in black musical movements, and you think that labeling Trap as part of that heritage is appropriation. It's inexplicable. Can you explain this to me?

I wouldnt really say that Hip Hop is part of EDM except in the loosest sense. Hip Hop is its own entity and culture. Sure it is founded on sampling, samplers, and beat makiing which isnt that different from EDM and yes you can dance to it. The same breakbeats that made jungle and drum & bass were used actively in hip-hop. Dance music as a whole whether its Disco, House, Drum & Bass, or Techno was overwhelmingly stemming from black music culture I will agree (tho Trance is the whitest EDM style i know of) until it got bigger and more european. Biggest issues i saw with this thread is that people were wanting to make Trapstep (EDM with trap elements and no rapping) and still call it Trap Music (which is hip-hop, generally has rapping, and is not EDM).

sorry to necro

Well, I'd say it really depends on whether you want to define EDM culture as an outgrowth of the Summer of Love/Rave culture of the early nineties, which is a primarily European cultural movement that can be argued to comprise a broad range of subgenres like prog house, trance, darkstep and hardcore, or as something more cosmopolitan. The former necessarily excludes the precursors of all of these movements, because those all grew out of a number of localized communities and their cultures, and are decidedly not rave cultures. Hip Hop is to the Bronx as House is to Chicago, Ragga is to Kingston, Techno is to Detroit, etc., so if you want to define EDM to include those precursors, you can't really tailor your definition to exclude Hip Hop. I'd say, if you want a term that can realistically exclude hip hop, and not need to include house and the like, then you can just call it Rave.

I will agree that Trance is the whitest music there is, though.

Biggest issues i saw with this thread is that people were wanting to make Trapstep (EDM with trap elements and no rapping) and still call it Trap Music.

I don't disagree here. But it's more because I don't really find Trap all that inspiring to begin with. Removing the vocals and adding "hardcore" or "progressive" elements to it just sounds like putting boring on top of boring, and saying that makes it interesting.

Okay guys. Trap is called trap because of the lifestyle that certain Southern rappers glorified themselves around, especially those who hailed from Atlanta, Georgia or Memphis, Tennessee and found success in their style.

Rappers like T.I., Three 6 Mafia, Soulja Boy, and many others. Trap really didn't become a solid genre until around 2005 when rappers like D4L, Crime Mob, and Dem Franchize Boyz became huge successes by combining ABC-style lyrics with heavy, 808-dependent beats.

From there the trap standard had remained solid and continued to gain popularity, especially in Atlanta and Chicago.

The reason why trap music is making a resurgence is because of the recent influences of the EDM community, bringing out artists like Brillz, ETC!ETC!, and the guys who helped aid the recent phenomenon the most, Flosstradamus.

It's honestly that simple. It's not too hard to understand.

oooo yay! very nice history lesson! :D loves me some music history. even if it is quite recent. :P
but i kinda like this trap stuff. im not a big fan of rap but this trap stuff iz quite catchy.

but on a somewhat related note, it boggles my mind how many genres of music there are and all the influences and history and all that stuff.

BTW very nice song Silva. iz so damn catchy!1!!! :D

Take my advice with a grain of salt as i too am learning how this music stuff works

Wanna know my standpoint on trap?

I honestly thought it was a joke. Literally. I thought someone was legitimately making a musical joke in the vein of more cowbell. Then I found out it was genre with a following and it's taken seriously.

...I still can't take it seriously ._.
