Pony Metal Album Collabortion Project (Working Thread)

Post Midis, project files, samples, stems, here. Also great place to request collaboration or specific files/sounds.

Out of curiosity, and I apologize if this is common knowledge/too far off topic, but what kind of 8 string do you have? Nobody around where I live seems to appreciate them and thus nobody has one but me it seems. Mine's a crappy little Schecter Omen. Either looking to replace the pickups or the guitar in the semi-near future.

I think a track like that would be all kinds of kickass for the Cupcakes song. I'm just brainstorming a few riff ideas for that one over here, as well as a short but suitably creepy orchestral intro. I'll upload a quick little MIDI when I'm finished. :)

Also I think it would be great to incorporate elements of this song into a kind of djent-metal-dubsteppy track. It's the right tempo, but it's got the dark, thrashy elements of metal that I love this band for.

I was thinking of writing some Meshuggah/Periphery style riffs for this. Really heavy djent stuff. Maybe add some fast crazy chromatic deathcore riffs as transitions. I'll try to write a few riffs on my own. Add some older Opeth style melodies at the beginning and end of the song, and through the solo.

In terms of dubstep, that would be most prominent in any breakdowns (we need at least 2 djent/deathcore breakdowns). The bass would be very heavy during these parts. Dissonant guitar leads, rhythm guitar cuts out to make room in the mix for bass. Bass would be like a cross between Excision, Downlink, and Descepticons having sex for that extreme heaviness. Lots of LFO, filter, panning, and EQ automation to make it sound as if it is indeed transforming. Done via resampling. I can do this, but it would be nice if someone else with more experience could do the dubstep bass.

Electronic synth throughout the song so that the combo of dubstep and djent is smooth.

Industrial/hydraulic sounds will be in the heavy parts.

What is the song going to be about? I already started making a Sweetie Bot song. Perhaps this could go for the Cupcakes song?

I think that the lyrics should be a collaboration effort. George and I can scream, growl, roar, squeal, and make various other guttural vocals. I'll leave the real singing to whoever can do it good.

As for any breakdown guitar riffs, I'm hoping I can put some pinch harmonics in there. Assuming I can even get them when recording from direct input... All breakdown riffs need odd time signatures. Like 7/4.

I guess normal riffs/thrashy riffs can be in 6/8. For some thrashy djent/deathcore riffs. Kinda like Unleash the Pwnies by Bulb or the thrashy riff from Digital Veil by The Human Abstract. Fast paced, diminished, chromatic notes, strange time signature for the tempo.

Since I usually do all of this weird stuff, I'll be the rhythm guitarist. Kyoga can have the leads. Lucky for me, I get to take charge of every musical abomination.

Also, how about having one of those crazy Dream Theater style prog metal solos? Shredding on every instrument, odd time, genre changes, etc. I was thinking of having a part in the solo where we shred the main melody of Cupcakes (song), swing jazz groove on Smile Smile Smile, piano improv solo on Becoming Popular, and build back into the song with a metal core style solo based on Beyond Her Garden. Of course, these would alternate around our base melody for the song.

About base melody, I'm not good with this. I'll need help creating one that is very emotional and sad, but very melodic. To retain the heaviness of the song, only the chorus, intro, solo, and outro would have any basis of the melody.

Guitar tuning is drop B. However, the key of the song doesn't have to be B. Just make sure that it is in a key that can utilize the low B power chord often. That way the song can have a groove.

Judging from my crazy plans, this song should be the Celestia makes a zombie Twilight one instead. Remember that one that was going to be 20+ min long? This seems pretty fitting. But so is Cupcakes... I can't decide, so I'll let you guys choose.

Cupcakes reference could get it booted off of EQD instantaneously. If you want something that might get community recognized, maybe we should go with the Celestia thing. Or one of the other ideas from the Google Doc.

Very dark. Extremely heavy music. Just add the dubstep and it could be the most complex brony song ever made. Also the most dark and hardcore. Theres only one other brony song that reaches that length, but we can definitely beat it by being even more complicated and dark.

Kyoga, you can make a 1-2 min ambient build-up intro to introduce the main musical themes. An ambient overture. Just wait until we have enough of the song is composed.

We should make and release a teaser of the song for each musical movement we finish. To build hype for the song's release. I'll try to make some art for this. I'll get help with animation for visuals and teasers. Once we have some teasers and visuals, we can try to get a well known brony to help us advertise. And EQD. If they like the teasers, they might help us out a little.

I'll create a Skype group later specifically for composing this. I will also make a google doc that every can edit so that we can have a backup of it. Just in case the chat group gets overrun by spam.

Add me on Skype. chromaticchaos

In synopsis, this is like Breaking Bonds crossed with Excision, Meshuggah, Periphey, Cannibal Corpse, MLP, more ponies, even more ponies, The Human Abstract, Between the Buried and Me, Suicide Silence, Opeth, and Dream Theater. All on steroids. Sound good?

One last thing, what if we got a brony rapper to rap for 32 bars of one of the movements? Just to make it even more progressive and awesome.

Just thought I'd share this: I put this together as a kind of intro for the Cupcakes track. What do you guys think? :)

http://speedy.sh/CZXvb/cupcakes-intro.mid

Starts out with a gradually fastening heartbeat over which additional sound effects or voices could be dubbed. Detuned choirs and bells accompany a low, sweeping B note (which actually sounds really good through one of my soundfonts). The tempo increases steadily towards 140bpm, so it can get dubsteppy later on. Then an orchestra hit brings in a chromatic riff on strings and piano, which could serve as a basis for a kind of djent riff later on. Once the orchestral part is done, the guitar starts playing a short SX-esque riff in B Phrygian with an erratic time signature (4/4 x3, then 7/8). This riff ends on a chromatic descent to a new section that I've left open in case anyone wants to build on it. ;) Any thoughts?

Do you mind it sounding fairly god-awful due to it being rendered in a single soundfont?

http://speedy.sh/xPWcF/cupcakes-intro.wav

This one kinda ruins the heartbeat and the guitar, but the music's still there in the MIDI for anyone to use or not use - it's up to you guys, really. :P

I was thinking of using more rhythm syncopation. Concerning rhythm, I'll try to make a riff that goes from 5/4 or 7/4 into 6/8. I also wanted to try something downtempo and rediculously heavy to begin with. For the intro. The second riff would pick up in pace (increase bpm and change time signaure). Kinda like Meshuggah.

I will try to write and record the riff I'm describing sometime soon. I'll post it here so you can all hear it.

Heartbeat thing is pretty cool. That will be kept in-tact.

I would've loved to try something for drums, but looks like you've already got that that covered :/
Maybe some piano?

Yay! :D

Obviously I've left them open for vocalists to interpret however they want. I think it's only fair that way (after all, the music hasn't even been written yet) - I may have even jumped the gun with my notes on the Nightmare Night track. :P

Kyoga, why don't we just transfer all of the good ideas from here to the Skywire project on Skype?

We can make the Rarity track as a collab between the metal band members.

All of the ideas for this were metal. I think we may as well just keep them as metal.

However, I would like to try djentstep with some of them...

Yes, it is different. Some of the songs that we came up with ideas for might actually become dubstep or jazz or something completely different.
