So how'd you get your start in music and how long?

So how'd you get your start in music and how long?

Postby itroitnyah » 18 Jun 2012 08:01

Alright guise, post your stories of how, when, what, or why you decided to take up music and or music production. Other interesting facts about whatever also welcome.

My story:
At the start of 2012 and a little earlier, I had myself an mp3 player, and had some of my favorite music on it. I really loved listening to music. I could for days, literally. Still can. But one day, while listening to DJAelxS and Skrillex, my brain woke and asked, "How do they make this music? I want to try! It sounds easy to make!" (of course I was really wrong). So one day, I googled: "How to make dubstep" and some sites popped up, and I found out about Cubase and Logic Pro. I did some more research, and tried to download Logic Pro (not saying how) onto the family PC, because I wasn't aware at the time that it was strictly for mac. I found out, and with my dreams crushed, tried for cubase. It wasn't working, because I'm not good at using that technique, so I asked my friends on memebase for help, and what I could do.

One of my friends, ParanoidPenguin, for those who recognize him, told me about LMMS. I downloaded it, all excited to start making some beats, and got confused at first, because I didn't know how to use LMMS. But my smarts pulled through and I learned the basics of LMMS by myself. Then I decided I needed to learn more, and went to youtube. There, I found perhaps one of my favorite tutorial making people in the world: LazerBlade. This guy was a demigod to me. He knew so much about LMMS. I used what I learned about LMMS from him, including downloading Synth1, which is also really amazing. Eventually, I got used to LMMS. I hadn't learned anything about EQing, distortion, amp, side-chain, gate, or anything, so I didn't know how to use the effects and stuff.

And then LMMS wasn't working out for me anymore. I still liked it and all, but it wasn't matching the criteria of what I wanted to make very easily. So I started checking out other DAWs (I still don't know what DAW stands for though), and found out about FL Studio, Ableton Live, Mixcraft, Reaper, and a few others. I found the FL Studio trial, and downloaded it. I instantly fell in love with it. I made a song on there, and got even more approval from my friends and subscribers. Then I decided that I should take a look at EQing, and other effects. I did a whole lot of video tutorials on those, not by lazerblade though. I sorta forgot about him at this point. Used those, and my friends and subscribers loved it even more. I then decided that I would download the ni massive demo, since I couldn't buy it (no money and all). Used that a bit, and the one friend I showed my samples to loved it. I didn't feel the intense drop beat that Knife Party and DJAlexS and other dubstep producers have though. So I asked on here, and people gave me really good answers, and I'm getting prepared to start my next song as of now.

First song published on February 13th, 2012 (only 9 days away from my birthday).

Interesting fact: I share the same name as ArtAttack (Sam), we're both the same age (most of the time, depending on when his bday is in comparison to mine. I think he's a few months older than me) And I also live in the same state as he does. Only about 4 hours away from him, roughly.

another fact: I played and took piano lessons from around kindergarten to 5th or 6th grade, then dropped them because I thought the piano was stupid xD /sigh, the good ol' days of immaturity

Time for soup's stories volume 3! (Okay, you don't get the joke. Nobody does, and it's best I don't explain it... It might leave some of you puking yourself to sleep...)

WelllllllLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL. I have always played instruments and stuff, but my super creative brain was dumb and didn't think of anything super creative and I wouldn't even TRY to make my own music because everything I made sounded like shit to me, even if other people pretty much had orgasms over the song I made on piano in 6th grade. Blah blah blah I learned way too fast and that ended with me losing interest blah blah blah omg. Oh. Did I mention that I hated electronic music for the longest time? Then one day I herd pendlum and sed "omg i like dis song" and then without even thinking, I bought their album "Immersion" because I thought it would be all rock sexy stuff like Witchcraft. I WAS WRONG. There was a lot of electronic stuff in there, but... I literally FORCED myself to listen to it, and that ended up with me liking it over time. Then boom boom boom electronic music = good stuff.

Then I was like "I wonder if I can make music like this..." but I just went "NOPE" and ignored any urge to start making music. Then all of the sudden, BRONY MUSIC HAPPENED! And I was like "Oh what a wonderful community of people that make good music I wonder if I can make music!" then I said "Yeah, lol, there's no way I'm learning to use FLS." Then I heard a couple Silva Hound songs, went out and bought his two albums (I got his EP's another time) and I was just like "Holy shit." and then boom I decided to pick up FLS and start making noise, experimented with it for a month, made my first song, and boom.

The end.

I actually don't remember why I even got FL Studio in the first place, because I had it sitting on my desktop unused for like half a year before I tried anything with it

All I could really say is that music has been basically the most important thing in my life as long as I can remember, and at some point that translated into me trying to make it myself.
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

I think you got the order wrong.

Anyway, basically colortwelve started making stuff in FL and introduced me to the wonders of bass music, and I decided to make stuff too.
Before this, I had played piano/guitar for the better part of my life/ was screwing around with a hard synth for a year with no way to record it. And then I hooked dat shit up, and I've been actually making stuff for about half a year maybe. And I have yet to get bitches. But I heard Dr. Drum might help.

Got forced to play guitar when I was 10, ended up loving it. Started taking it as serious as shit when I was like 14. Learned music theory and all that fun stuff. A few months ago I got into electronic thanks to Eurobeat Brony, and here I am today.

I don't trust Dr. Drum. It just sounds like a simple program that a group of collage students put together. Can it even run simple vsts? The ad I saw for it didn't really talk much about music other than the mainstream music, so I think that its main use is for main stream style music... you know, basic drums, maybe a few other instrument presets. And then vocals will make up the rest.

I'm screwing around with electronic music on Ableton right now. Lol.

I actually have played multiple instruments over the course of my life, but I was only interested in guitar. I started taking guitar seriously about last year. Now I have an 8 string guitar for progressive metal and djent. Now that it's summer, I'm going to do a lot of screwing around with electronic music, free vst plugins, and metal/ guitar related stuff. And ponies of course...

Thought all electronic music was terrible for a long time. Found Jackle App and Tombstone, changed my mind. This was... February, I think. Then I found Aviators. He (and the two above guys) got me curious as to how it was made. Found FL Studio and started producing early march, made shitty trance and stuff for a while until I started listening to Thatsonofamitch and Contempt, when I decided to start making dubstep about a month ago. Didn't look back.

It was 5th grade.

As all 5th graders going into 6th grade my school made us pick if we wanted to be in band or not. My friend sitting next to me said he wanted to play the saxophone. So then I did too.

I jumped the shit outta that bandwagon.

That and my mom made me play violin when I was younger, but then again who didn't?

Uh, I think 7 years now. Yeah, 7 years. I wish I had more time on it, but starting at 10 is still fairly young to start.

Malmsteen is a crazy mofo. I'll probably get into him more once I get a grip on my main "heroes".

I suppose I should list a few. I really like John Petrucci, Christian Muenzner, Sam Totman, Paul Gilbert, and a bunch more I wont name.

He's a monster. While I have inherited nothing about his style (mainly right hand), I can't help but practice his excersizes. I just love what he does. In fact, I think I might bust out his Intense Rock DVD tomorrow.

Yeah, "B.R.O" is something else...

Man, my arpeggio's are probably the most boring ones you can think of. I literally just follow the chord progression and maybe throw in an inverted chord once in a while if I need to stick an extra note in their for rhythm reasons. It's probably because I'm writing it on the computer and that makes me lazy haha

How on earth did you find time to practice while maintaining a 4.0 gpa?

My high school is extremely tough and my college is easy. I guess it's a good thing I'm doing college full time.

But really, that many didn't graduate? ._. I thought my class sucked.

Yeah, mine has the same deal. I started it a semester late though so I won't be getting my A.S the same time as my diploma (why on earth Performance with Sound Specialization is an A.S is beyond me). Only difference is I don't have to take any high school classes.
