Everyone wants their music to be heard by other people but don't do it just to be popular. Ultimately popularity is one of things in the brony community that's not necessarily as glamorous or as possible as it seems. Do it because you like to make the music, that it makes you happy to do so, and you gain friendships from that experience. Ultimately if you do all that and become popular then that's great but likely of course you'll gain some new problems that come with that fame. There's no such thing as happiness without some headaches.

It's absolutely normal to desire to be more known. The problem is if it's your only aspiration.

And if you had to make a thread about it, chances are you aren't going to be. Be cool about it.

Cheers ^^

It depends on your vision. I don't care for being popular, but do what you want- you will have to compete if you do want to be popular, though. It was a first-come first-serve thing and every day it gets harder.

Good luck.

True. Unless you come out with something so amazing and awe-inspiring that it forces your way to the top, it's a long, hard fight to get popular.

Or you can get lucky. That's how it normally happens.

Roll a 10000000-sided die. If it lands on the sum of 2 cubes between 2 and 2.5 million while a full moon is out after you've won 72 Pokemon battles in a row (no more and no less) and lose your Pikachu to a Rattata while it has 1HP, you're popular.

I make music because I love music, and it's great fun. I don't ever expect to be "popular" in this community, and that's just fine.
I have access to people that are as incredibly talented if not more so as the musicians out there that have a bigger insignificant number on their youtube channel. I try to leave the "popular" alone on Skype most of the time because I know they have so much on their plate.

Look around and you'll find some incredible talent! I get just as excited to see someone like DJ Pon-3 release his latest track as I do when Tombstone or whoever does. (Exception to this rule is Archie. Insta-download on anything he makes before I hear it.)

Bottom line:
Do not strive for that number to climb on your channel. That is the wrong focus. People on a game I play online stress themselves out so much over their ranking number and how they deserve it to be higher, when instead they should be practicing on improving their skill.

Look at it as a thermometer. You can look at it to see if you have improved. You personally don't have any control over that number, so don't sweat it. And in the end, the only thing that really matters is the close friendships you have made.

just do your best, make the best music that you like, and find music that sticks OUt amongst all the great music out there. You can do what everyone else does (dubstep) or you can do stuff that's different (maybe disco, who knows) but ultimately just put out a good track that makes people say "whoa". :o :D

You are missing one very, very important piece of the puzzle

99% of "Popular" brony musicians are extremely humble, and would never say those things.

Brony musician "popularity" is a thing of the moment or a luck of the draw; if you don't get 10k subs with 2 songs, chances are you're not gonna get them with 100 now, sorry to break it to you.

That doesn't mean it still can't happen, but the chances for it are about 1 in a 50000.

You should do brony music for fun, not to become a popular brony musician. It's just not a realistic goal anymore :(

Have fun though!

Many people (including me) start making music to get popular, recognized, you know.
But after some time, most people kinda lose that attitude, and start making music for themselves, and appreciate others' work more. The "popular" part gets kinda overshadowed by sheer appreciation for music as art. It's still here ( I still want to make a living off music in the future ) but you don't really care about it.
So, no, wanting to be more popular is not a bad thing. It might be the thing that gets your creative cogs running in the first place, the first kick to start making art, but it will probably go away.
Some people however don't really ever get accustomed to fame

I can relate to how Joel feels, but what he feels is a billion times greater than what I have right now, and the pressure for me to do well is, at times, unbearable. No, I'm not talking about brony music, that shit is just for fun. I'm talking about my actual professional music career.

Everyone should just stop and read that post. I think it'll resonate with a lot of people here in some way or another.

There's a few things you may be interested in. You probably already know about these, but whatever.

Toastbeard - it's a weekly music compo on a selected topic. You'll get great response from everyone. It's one of the best things about MLR.

Submit your stuff to EQD. If it's pony (has to be 100% undeniably pony), and if it's good, he'll put it up for other people to listen to.

Use the chat - usually there's always someone there willing to critique your work-in-progress.

There's numerous pony radio sites out there that you can submit your music to that will also put your music into their database for others to hear.

Share with your friends IRL. Not saying we aren't friends, but sharing your work to people you can meet face-to-face can be great fun.

That's all I can think of on the fly of ways of publishing your work. As a blogger I do admit I enjoy sharing my stuff with other people. When people come back for more, that's the best.

deep down i have dreams about workin with other brony musicians or just musicians in general

That is part of the magic of MLR. You are amongst them right now! Find somepony to collab with. There's guys active on here that are just as good as more popular ones. They'll put up with a lot of nonsense (me) just to help you learn.

I would offer help, but you seem to be farther on the path than I am with production.

Sorry to say this but how are you any different than all the other aspiring new brony musicians? Sounds pretty typical to me, this thread was completely unnecessary, and I just did that to help reshape your expectations because I think you went into this thing with a goal set to become popular, which 95% won't happen the way things are now, and certanly not soon. It will take you probably months or even years even to reach 4 figures on your subscriber count.

I also had hopes of becoming a well known guy withing the community in November when I started out (well, when I switched my focus from the ussual to brony music), but I soon saw that it doesn't work the way I expected and that it's a slow but rewarding process. What you REALLY need to do now is to change your mindset so that it becomes a pleasant one, where you are happy to reach every new milestone like 100, 200, 300 subscribers, and not an irritating one where you are unhappy that you are not reaching 1000, 2000, 3000 yet.

but seriously, my blogging sucked when all I was doing it for was views. I switched my focus, and my results where much better.

I haven't had the experience with music yet, so I don't know if it's similar, but I imagine it's so. Most types of artistic things tend to be.

there's some stubborn truth to this, you'll likely never become a paul van dyk making experimental/sub genre music for the masses. likewise I'll never become a mic the microphone making psytrance for bronies.

A lot of people get stuck in that phase where they don't have their own sound yet, but as soon as you discover your own sound, you can work to perfect it, and then you will have followers.

Mic the Microphone is popular because he's a good rapper and singer, so he specializes in those things.

Makkon is popular because he does big orchestral/epic tracks, and specializes in those.

Point is, if you look at the very popular brony musicians, they all have a very signature sound and genre they specialize in, whereas most of us that are still discovering our own sound, we'll both gain and lose followers with each different direction we take our sound.

I'm not sure if I can go so far as to say that I'm /expressly/ in it for the subscribers, but whenever I release a song, my eyes are glued to my email watching new subscribers and comments come in. Its a goal for me. The music I make is not made for fame, per se, but it is a part of my soul and I get overjoyed when people like it as well. I have no expectations of where I should be. In fact, I think my music is way over-hyped and doesn't deserve the attention it is getting. But I still work my hardest to please everyone who hears it. Is that wrong? I think there is a difference between "wanting people to like you" and "wanting what you make to be liked."
