Good luck.

True. Unless you come out with something so amazing and awe-inspiring that it forces your way to the top, it's a long, hard fight to get popular.
Or you can get lucky. That's how it normally happens.

But after some time, most people kinda lose that attitude, and start making music for themselves, and appreciate others' work more. The "popular" part gets kinda overshadowed by sheer appreciation for music as art. It's still here ( I still want to make a living off music in the future ) but you don't really care about it.
So, no, wanting to be more popular is not a bad thing. It might be the thing that gets your creative cogs running in the first place, the first kick to start making art, but it will probably go away.
Some people however don't really ever get accustomed to fame

I haven't had the experience with music yet, so I don't know if it's similar, but I imagine it's so. Most types of artistic things tend to be.

Its a goal for me. The music I make is not made for fame, per se, but it is a part of my soul and I get overjoyed when people like it as well. I have no expectations of where I should be. In fact, I think my music is way over-hyped and doesn't deserve the attention it is getting. But I still work my hardest to please everyone who hears it. Is that wrong? I think there is a difference between "wanting people to like you" and "wanting what you make to be liked."
