Equestrian Experience

Does anyone has had any experience with horses? Like riding or owning or just petting one when you were a kid and then ran away horrified because it looked like it was going to eat your hand (not talking from experience here)?

I took horse riding lessons when I was a teenager. That's about it.

Huh. Ironic now that you watch MLP.

A childhood friend of mine owns a horse, who I've met a few times, and my grandfather owns a farm with a few horses, who I've also met a few times. My university also raises Arabian horses (on account of a decades-old contract), and I've met a few of them since my ex's job is to take care of them.

Other than a few friendly encounters, nothing really.

Damn, you so lucky. My college has an equestrian club, but I've never actually joined. My family has owned horses since before i was born and we were members of the local equestrian club in another country. I even went on some overnight trips and marches. My legs hurt like fuck afterwards though.

I loved horses but i get really nervous riding them. I can only ride them if the saddle has a hook and if they don't trot. Most of the times it just ends up me sitting on the horse.

Yeah. My only real problem with horses is that they can't look up, so they don't know if there's a ceiling above them. The stable the horses are kept in at night during the week (there's a different one for the weekends) has an embarrassingly low ceiling. One night we had a thunder storm and one of the horses got spooked and reared back. Poor thing hit her head on the ceiling so hard she killed herself :( What a way to start the day, finding that at the stables...

EDIT: You are all feeling sad now. (inb4 "idgaf" "no f***ks given" etc. etc.)

An Icelandic Horse is the size of a pony. I've ridden them several times. I've hand-fed them hay lots of times too.

Been riding since I was 12 I think... Galloping without a saddle is quite epic :)
Things get nasty though when a horse gets scared of something and you're on it's back. One time this happened and the horse blasted off at full speed throwing me on it's neck. I was hanging there for maybe two rounds around the place and finally managed to get up and pull the reins. That was enough rodeo for a lifetime for me :D

God, i can't ride a horse without a hooked saddle much less bareback. I had an awful experience when i was a kid. I was riding with my sister around a small palm tree, nothing big, but then the horse starts galloping and since i was siting on the flank i started jumping with the horse.vI thought i was going to fall and now because of that i can only ride a horse alone.

No, but it certainly left a scar on me. I still ride horses when i can (i have been in parades and long, 5-8 trips before the age of 13) but i'm still very rattled. I rarely make the horse accelerate. Funny thing is that after my first long trip i wanted to be a jockey.

I can imagine. Haven't been on a horse who was scared. I have been on one who was pissed the fuck off though. When I took riding lessons we circulated horses iirc, and one time I got a particular horse who seemingly hated one of the other horses. During training something flipped in his brain and he broke formation and went after the other one. Didn't last for longer than a couple of seconds. But those were some scary seconds let me tell you.

The latest horse experience I have was around last Halloween, when one little girl that I saw had a real life pony (She was dressed as Jessie from Toy Story) and I got to pet it. I think its name was Butterscotch, so called because of its brown and white color scheme.

Yah. I know how it feels...

You should try to overcome your fears. It's normal to be scared sometimes, even I was reluctant to ride after one serious accident (horse tripped and squished my leg between a wall and it's body). But you just need to make yourself realize that it's unrational and doesn't help you at all. It's just preventing you from enjoying really cool things.
Falling is quite rare and 99% of cases falling doesn't even cause any injuries. Looking at statistics riding is actually one of the safest sport ever. Besides, they say that you need to fall 100 times, before you're a good rider :) I've got 95 times left :S

Damn it i want to hug a horse/pony in the neck! :C It feels so warm when the horse is friendly. The last time i was near a horse was when i was on vacation in the Dominican Republic. My dad owns some horses and we went to the feeding stables where i met "El niño" (Boy). He was pretty nice, a bit distant at first, but eventually he became friendlier (after he saw i wasn't going to hurt him) and even started peeking over my sketchbook as i drew him".

Oh i did long ago...sorta. I get flustered but if need be, I increase the pace. The problem is that i can't keep with the horse's galloping rhythm and the constant hopping while on the saddle can get a bit painful and disorienting after a bit.

Oh. That gets better only by practise. Idea is something like using your stomach and back muscles to 'absorb' the bouncing so you won't get flown up too much. It's tricky in the start but becomes automatic once you get the hang of it.
Trillionage wrote:Damn it i want to hug a horse/pony in the neck!

Once a horse hugged me. After a lesson when I took off the saddle and brushed it etc. it laid it's head on my shoulder. :) That's kinda cute.
