[VIP Remix] Beyond Her Garden

Postby Sonic Breakbeat » 11 May 2012 17:56

Needs moar feedback! My first attempt at something "glitchy", and I need to see what people like or don't like about this style.

Finished! Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Forget that last statement, I've decided to put more time into this to make it much better. Still looking for feedback!

It's back up! Thanks again to everyone who gave feedback! It was much needed!

For better quality (I don't know what's been up with YouTube lately):

imho el glitcho sounds more like a brostep drop thingy than the cool granular madness glitches that I know and love. :(

I like this, it's got some punch behind it with that kick which is nice. The only thing is that the vocals in my opinion don't really fit with the song, they seem out of place to me.
Listening to it again, I think it's just where you've placed them that seems weird to me, but that's just me. But its a joy to listen to, looking forward to seeing it completed :D

Care you explain further? I couldn't quite understand your original reply at first; are you saying you don't like the drop-kind-of bass?

Thanks for the feedback! Are you trying to say that the timing of the vocals are off? Or which vocals are being used? More detail would be fantastic, but I'm really amazed at the amount of feedback I've gotten already - usually I never get any :/

Yeah, I'm not really hearing glitch anywhere. I hear a brostep bass drop that starts at 0.30 and I'm assuming that that's supposed to be the glitchy part. =w=

Well for the record, it's not really supposed to be the glitch genre, it's supposed to be Electro House. What I meant was it was my first full-on attempt at something sounding glitchy (like in perhaps Electro House).

Anyway I went ahead and changed the bass drop patch because personally I started hating it, and I made some other changes as well and re-uploaded it. Give it another listen and maybe you could suggest how I can make it more glitchy? :)

I'm still hearing it as brosteppy dawg!

Usually when working with glitch, you let it encompass the whole audio track. Though in genres like breakcore/IDM the main focus is on the drums. But I could see you using some beat repeats and retriggering because that's what gives glitch its granular and choppy sound. (Beat repeats is basically repeating one section of the bar and retriggering is a really fast beat repeat. I dunno if you're new to the terminology so I'm playing it safe!)
Another fun trick is either chopping out 16th's or 32th's from the waveform to give the track a bit of jump or modulating the volume using a noise gate which you sidechain to a swingy jazz beat so that when the beat peaks, so does whatever track that you're modulating. It gives a weird glitchy swing to whatever you're doing.
Of course there is the normal gating as well, which is basically turning the volume on and of at either 16th's or faster. Beware of doing it too fast tho, because then it can easily turn noisy!

I don't know what you mean by "you let it encompass the whole audio track". I think if you explained to me what makes it sound "brosteppy" it would help me a little more, but I really appreciate you trying to help here.

I don't completely understand the beat-repeat concept, but I assume you mean making the kick faster.

Anyway for clarification, I'm trying to sound a little bit like Knife Party, but keeping to some of my previous styles.

No no, not just the kick. A beat repeat repeats a bar of whatever you set it to, in different increments.

With letting it encompass the whole audio track I mean that you should let the glitching not only span over the bass, but EVERYTHING.

ps. I don't know jack shit about Knife Party, so that statement is lost upon me! I'll explain further later when I'm not tired as balls. >_>

Lol, okay, I understand beat repeats more. I only thought you meant just the kick because when I think of the word "beat" I think of percussion.

Anyways, thanks again for the feedback. Honestly I'm amazed at how well it turned out compared to my previous attempts..

And again, I wasn't trying to make it completely glitch (although it seems like you wanted it to be, lol). My first remix of it was House, and as a VIP remix I didn't want to stray too far away from the original genre.

VIP's are when an artist remixes their own song.

Some feedback:
-The drop seems a bit mid and low range heavy, it just sounds a bit uneven compared to the rest of the song - just having the bass kick in can work in the break, but it should flow into itself. Honestly fixing this is really just as simple as turning down your non-sub bass synths a little, they're crowding out the percussion anyways.

-In the second verse I think you've got the timing off, it sounded kinda odd there - I might be wrong but I think the verse doesn't come in directly on the beat.

-The intro buildup could use some more variation in buildup instruments, you just used snare rolls and while it works it could sound a bit better if you got some other sounds in there like upriser synths or reverse symbols.

-Your drums are pretty weak, but this could mainly just be because of the bass drowning them out. In wubstep stuff you normally want to cut off the subs of the kick when the wubs come in so they don't interfere. Also some parallel compression might help make them cut through a little more, they're just a bit in the background right now, which is a "no-no" in any wubstep scenario, you're going to want really driving drums.

Overall it's a pretty good remix - not intensely surprising in any way but you did pull off the sound, it's got some little production issues but they can always be fixed. Also I don't hear any glitch influence in there.

Thanks for the feedback!

Too bad you had to give me the best feedback after I released the track :( Anyway I did notice some timing errors which appears to be my DAW's fault (it rarely ever happens though), so I will most likely take it down for a bit.

I can agree there might be a little too much low-end, and I will look into fixing it as you suggested. I'm assuming by parallel compression you mean side-chain compression, which I already have in the mix, but it's not that strong.

My drums are not weak, as you say, but you are correct at saying that it may be the basses that are interfering with it.

I also plan to improve the build-ups as you have suggested.

Thank you!

It's mainly that when people say that they make something glitchy I expect it to be glitchy!

Otherwise listen to what whitetail said. Like, sidechain the bass to let the kick and snare through, and boost the hat in the EQ to make it pop and so on. Honestly, Whitetail was spot on so me analyzing the track is redundant. =w=

Yeah, no offense but Whitetail's analysis was a little more helpful. By saying "glitchy" is was referring to the fact that all of my music up to this point has been melodic, and placing different bass hits and synths riffs in random places never worked out for me.

I already have side-chain compression working on everything but the hats, but I don't want it to be TOO strong because it sounds weird and over-compressed that way. After I fixed it up though I think I increased it to the point where it sounds good but not over-compressed.

Anyway, thanks again for trying to help.

But I have never heard your music before, I have no point of reference and when you're describing something that's usually the way to go. It is not intrinstically glitchy and should as such not be named as such, because it places a different value and expectation on what you think you're gonna get. I was originally interested because your nick is Sonic Breakbeat which for me implies that you work with chopping up drumbreaks, which is what I do to live through the day lest I die of boredom. ;w;

But this is turning into semantics, which is a digression from the music at hand. Just be careful to not state something when your definition is arbitrary, but the word itself has an intrinstic meaning. It confuddles people. >_>

Well sorry for the confuddlesion. My nick is Sonic Breakbeat because I usually make Drum and Bass tracks, but of course I like to experiment with other genres such as House and Electro.

Just never mind, it's not glitch, it's Electro House. I should have stated that in the first place and this argument wouldn't have happened :/

I think a DUBsteppy drop is cool. (Brostep is a forsaken word. Thou shall not use it. Or I will link thee to this video: /watch?v=1NSWLa1UtIY) (lol) But seriously, I cant imagine the intro all glitched up. I think this is almost perfect, but you need to make the bass a bit crispier. Just a tiny bit. It feels a bit... not weak, just... in the background.

Thanks for the feedback! As for the bass, I think I managed to fix that in the newest mix xD

I feel done with it now and will probably release it sometime later today. This thread will be updated without the WIP tag and the newer video when it's up :P
