Knife Party sounds in Massive

Postby senntenial » 12 Apr 2012 13:28

Heya, guys. Just wondering if you guys know how to make a really heavy bass as heard here -
It doesn't really wub as much as eeewaaaeeeewaaaeeeewaaa
I know I should be getting to my own styles and such, but I like to copy first when I'm learning new songs.

You won't be able to make the sound purely in Massive. KP have an aversion to using the 'Modern Talking' waveform, so here's a few ideas.

Look around to see if you can find a vowel filter, or formant filter. This would likely be the easiest way to achieve a similar sound. You can also try playing with the waveshape modifiers in Massive, setting it to Formant and adjusting it using different wavesounds. You could also experiment with filters and bitcrushers to obtain a more vowel-like sound.

Massive's sine shaper will get you some of those sounds if you automate it right

This guy does all his sounds with Massive and 3xOsc, some of them kinda similar fare to KP's stuff

Thing is you can't really expect to get that sort of thing directly from massive, it's going to take a bit of sound design work and layering to get a sound. Just play around with various effects and sampling techniques until you have something neat going.

(If you're going for particularly complicated sounds in Dubstep it's very very rare that it can all be accomplished by one plugin, layering is your friend).

The sample and hold effect is sort of like a bitcrusher, in that it divides up the samples of the sound.

If you set the sample and hold in the right position, it will break up the formants in the sound, and when thrown throw a low-pass filter and a decent amount of resonance, the position of the filter will achieve a lot of those vowel sounds.

An unfortunate side effect of bitcrushing and/or S&H, is you get some high pitched frequencies that (IMO) don't sound very good, thus requiring some EQ work to cut those frequencies down.

Experiment with sine shaping, dimension expansion, bit crushing, and tube compression.
