Now Soundcard Crap x.x

Thread repurposed, original topic resolved; see here for new topic; viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1729&p=17717#p17717

Alright, so; lately I've been having this issue with... crackling, while sound was playing. Any sound. Hell, even the Window's sound (like when it goes "BIIING; THERE'S ALREADY A FILE WITH THIS NAME. OVERWRITE?") has static, and I did think it was my headphones, but I've gone through these;

(Had to tinyurl, sorry; it's just office depot); http://tinyurl.com/7kead5n
(Can't find the box, so no link) some, like, $40 earbuds that were really awesome
And these; (More tinyurl; this time for Bose) http://tinyurl.com/86o5v9d

Now; either I've blown all of these out in the span of about a month, OR, something is terribly amiss with my computer. And none of these fuzz when I plug them into my iPod, so what the fuck is going on?

I can't work on music, I can barely listen to the softest of sounds, and even Skype booping at me is mindbogglingly painful due to the sheer amount of distortion on the sound. (Hence I have almost all the sounds off)

I'm not so sure I haven't managed to murder my built-in soundcard...

However; I'm also not really sure what exactly is going on at all, anyway. One minute, It's just crackling in rhythm, the next I've paused it or yanked out my earbuds and it sounds just fine. I can pause the sound and count to 3 Mississippi and it'll correct itself for a little while; about 30 seconds before the static comes back and starts to build up.

This is not only annoying; but it's getting to the point that it's actually painful.

Any of you have any imput?

Something's wrong with your soundcard or mobo i guess.
I'd buy a new external soundcard, they're alot better and cheaper than the integrated ones anyways.
The static could come from some other weird reason aswell.. so don't run to the PC store after reading this

Restart your computer. What's probably happening is that your soundcard's buffer is filling for some odd reason. You can also go into your sounds window, disable your driver, and re-enable it. That should fix the problem.

If it doesn't, invest in an external soundcard or an audio interface. Your sound card probably has something physically wrong with it.

Restarted. Still happened.

Did the driver thing; broke my sound 'cause I'm stupid, restarted again. Still happened.

invest

Fabulous...

Thank you though; I appreciate at least the confirmation of my fears.

Alright, so browsing MLR and the web about Soundcard stuff, came across that old thread on Soundcards that Myth started a while back.

If you're going to get an external sound card, save up for a decent audio interface. From what I hear, external sound cards and audio interfaces do the exact same thing, except what we call audio interfaces tend to have more things geared towards musicians than standard external sound cards. EG, XLR microphone inputs, a quarter-inch output instead of an eighth-inch one, etc.

Bartekko: PCI-based ones are faster and have fewer latency issues, but if your PCI-based sound card is inside your computer where sound cards traditionally are, you can get some hum and electrical interference from the other stuff inside your computer. I know they do make external PCI sound cards, though.

So... Are you talking about like, this? http://www.amazon.com/Express-Blaster-T ... pd_sim_e_2
Or like this? http://www.amazon.com/Xonar-Essence-24- ... roduct_top

Or like this thing? http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Firewire- ... 714&sr=1-5

I no can computer good ._. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

I feel like this; http://www.amazon.com/Express-Blaster-T ... pd_sim_e_2 Is probably going to end up being what I'm getting, as it's the sound card+the audio interface. I won't make any decisions without input from someone who understands this crap though~ <3

Most likely, bump up the buffer or update the driver. My soundcard only gives me good sound at 4192 samples.

I was talking about the last one. Especially if you want to do any sort of recording work at all. Also, before you buy, check to see if there's an ASIO driver for whatever sound card you're planning to buy. It'll reduce latency by a lot and you can more easily control your buffer size. Generally, everything over $100 will have its own ASIO driver, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Of course, sending your old one in for repairs could work too. If the warranty's still there, no point in spending money if you don't have to.
