Quitting music

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

It not only helped Facade, but it could help anypony else. Lord knows it could give me a shove in the right direction instead of let me wallow in self pity.

because right now, I feel the same way you did when you first began this thread, Facade. Sure I have FL Studio at my disposal, but I feel my beats are generic and I'm literally bringing nothing new to the table. I look back at my older stuff and think "This stuff is absolute shite, only someone without a sense of taste would listen to this garbage."

I've done plenty of those things (Especially the VST thing) and I'm experimenting with other genres, but I feel like I can't find my unique voice. Somewhere, no matter what I try, somepony's going to be the best at that genre and be the only one recognized for it, and everypony else will be disregarded.

Go on, listen to one of my songs and listen to someone else's, I bet you money that other persons' is going to be better in some way.

You know, looking back, my stuff isn't bad. Sure, I'm not great, but I'm not the suckiest. I was just having a depressive episode. :P

I just need motivation, and free time. xD

Man I've the same feeling for the past few weeks. I finished up this song I've been working on for a bit. And I've 4 project files on my desktop that I would just open, then look at for a while, and whatever I tried didn't work. I can't been consistent at all lately. I'm not sure If ill even make the second Smile deadline right now. This is helping me a bit though. Knowing that other people are feeling this.

I feel like I know what I should be doing now. Just gotta find the time and the motivation.
A fews songs in progress at all times!

I get this very often too. Most of the time I'll start working on something and be happy for a while because I think it sounds good. Then I'll listen to something else that will make me go "holy crap, that's so awesome, I wish I could do something like that!". Then I'll go back to what I was working on and suddenly think it all sounds like shit, and start wondering why I even bother trying to do anything in the first place. Then I have to fight this immense urge to scrap everything and not try to do anything ever again. Repeat every couple of days.

Each time I try very hard to turn this around into the "this is awesome and I'm gonna start working towards making something this awesome" way of thinking, but it's very hard to convince myself of some things, sometimes. :c

Awwww.

Yeah i find it very hard to put out a finished product that i don't double back later and want to tweak a bit further most of the time. they key i guess is to put stuff down and revisit it later (maybe shuffle partial projects around when you need a break), have friends pre-listen and guide you to a better mix, or just listen-critique-fix and repeat until its done. Either way the problem with having such great musicians in this community is that it means the bar is often that much higher to try to meet. Ultimately find a pattern that works best for you, find out how to make your mark and who you are as musician, and try to do what feels fun and just do your best. Too much self-doubt will ruin it.

You can never quit music, music can only quit you... And it never does. =)

I agree with taking a break, my hard drives are littered with HUNDREDS of .flp's that saw about 30 minutes of work and were promptly forgotten. I took about a month off, and the day I came back I pulled an all nighter and had a rough draft of a song I REALLY liked. All I need to do was recharge my batteries.

Also, try not to write a song if you're feeling bored... Do something else, like try a really weird combination of effects and synths, or build on your library of custom tones. I have recently been using .flp's as virtual 'lab spaces', building sounds and effects to be used elsewhere, and more often than not that will inspire a song.

And last but not least, never judge your music against another's under the heading of 'better or worse'...we all do it differently, so no song can ever actually be better. I've come to realize that the only scale of measurement I should be using when I evaluate my work is 'Is it good enough for me?' And if it's not, I listen to it over and over until I can pinpoint what needs to change, and then I change it.

A parting quote: True art is never finished, only abandoned.
Pride can be wounded. Swagger is INVINCIBLE..

I agree. Taking a break is really helpful. I found this out the hard way with a band I'm in. You can only beat your head against the wall so many times before you get a concussion. When you take a little time off, ideas start to flow back. You get epiphanies a lot quicker.

I haven't read the whole thread but I can say, Like a couple weeks ago I wanted to quit, I wasn't really feeling good about it, after the balloon party, I've just felt like I've made no progress. No motivation. Infact, I felt like I was doing worse.
And with lack of attention, and the how barely music has been influencing life I thought "what's the point?"

All I did was take a walk outside, get some fresh air and take some break from production, sometimes you use up so much of your creativity and influence that you might actually run out and you may not get the concept of the song.

Of course, everyone has a weak side, some of us may suck (like me). but hey! Even the best of the best go through this situation, don't make this little rock on the road send your journey

Don't give up! Keep practicing!

Yep old thread but the song remains the same.

It is SO common to run into a week or a few days where you feel that that you're not making a difference or not getting the recognition and you feel like hanging it up. Just take a break, disconnect for awhile from what's bothering you, and hopefully you should get re-energized. You have to enjoy making music and you do that on your own time so just find the balance you need to succeed. Realize that lows happen all the time to LOTS of people and you should be able to bounce back and find that strength again.
