4thImpulse - Super8 <WIP> Quick update

Experimenting with tempo's and triplets, this is no where near complete so please criticize all you can.

EDIT: soundcloud butchered the high frequency fidelity, sorry.

Not liking the near-inaudibility of the kick in the beginning section, makes the sidechaining stand out and sound bad IMO. Might want to layer it with a more thumpy lower-midrange kick or something.

The twinkly arp is nice, I like it.

That part after the first fade out is kinda odd, it seems off beat. I'd wait like a measure so the cymbal has time to fully or almost fully fade out, then add those stabs in. I like delay on my cymbals, I think it would work out well on this one. Just like some sort of echo thing with a decently slow decay and maybe like 3/16 or 5/16 or 6/16 time.

The chords follow a rather basic and static pattern throughout the song, I'd look into changing them up, maybe during the second portion.

Yup, soundcloud will do that...

Anywho.. I really enjoy the relaxed, yet dark atmosphere of the tune so far, I'll disagree with 9V as I think the way you have the kicks set up right now go hand-in-hand with the whole feel of the song, the sidechaining might stand out a little more then it needs to if I put my focus on it, but it doesn't stand out as a whole imo.

I however, will agree with 9V on the chords and how static they are, especially at the start.

I agree with Nine Volt, the kick inthe beginning has a good amount of punch, but I think you could bring it more forward to really drive the composition forward.

also that slow build transition around the 1:00 mark was great, it had me reeling for a drop. great tease

Update from the dropbox!

Bad mix is bad, all it needed was some transient shaping to bring it out, volume alone is not always the answer but thanks for pointing it out

Waiting a measure made it feel really awkward, even with delay on the cymbal, it doesn't bother me so I will keep it as is.

This song is built on synthesis rather melodic elements, changing the chords would give it a different feeling. I am planning on adding a more melodic breakdown and other elements and keeping these elements for the main 'beef' of the song. The chords you do hear now are just carefully planned synth automation and modulation.

This is definitely a song that belongs as background music in a kind of 'dungeon-deamon-fighting hack and slash' video game.

The chords are not meant to be melodic but to bring a sense of tension, but a 'rising' or changing tension. Just a constant feeling.

i love all teh sounds :3

Maybe not critique but it made me feel good, so thanks!

I enjoy that tension moment too, the drop in this well suits the song as a whole.
