Your thoughts on someone going mainstream

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

make me feel like I'm listening to a sellout singing to me about how awesome it is being a sellout.

But such songs about selling out are great!

I've never been sure how much of it is people becoming more accustomed to new sounds and how much of it is more fringe genres getting their sharp edges worn down and becoming more palatable to your average radio listener
]

It's a mix of both but getting the edges worn down is what seems to be the case in the microscopic view and being accustomed to news sounds in the macroscope. Individual genres are worn down, like New Wave c.1977 to "New Wave" c.1980 or Synthpop c1979 to Synthpop c.1982 (Though as synthpop has gone back into obscurity it seems to have gotten a little harder again), or Industrial c.1978 to EBM c.1984 (Not that EBM was really ever mainstream but I'm being relative here) to "Industrial" (Metal) c.1992. The list goes on an on. But Compare Rock and Roll c.1959 to Hard Rock c.1973.

With the rest of the paragraph, I pretty much agree.

I kind of enjoy when artists go a bit mainstream and deliberately ham up the mainstream trappings to the point where they become grotesque and... completely un-mainstream. Like Mike Patton, maybe.

This. Would Lou Reed count too? He was popular for a while.

mainstream isn't a big deal
selling out is

when a musician or band changes it's style to try to do what's popular is bullshit

like showtek
fuckin showtek

when an artist becomes popular but continues to do what they do, then yay for them

Sort of, but you didn't say it in four words, so it wasn't obvious.
