Launchpad or Push? (or others?)

Postby JeremiS » 31 Mar 2013 08:12

I'm planning on buying a midi controller, for live performances like Madeon and Metrognome.
Madeon uses a Launchpad and Metrognome uses a Maschine.
I also know that Ableton recently released their Push midi controller. Is it like an upgraded version of the Launchpad?

Which one should I buy?
Launchpad, Maschine, Push, or something else?

Sorry if I'm not being very coherent, I'm really tired.
DAW: FL Studio 10

Whats your budget?
What do you expect out of it? (be specific)

Launchpad is around $100 and Push is $600, the machine lies somewhere in the middle. Push is pretty much a huge upgrade over the launchpad, its more seamlessly connected to Ableton. Machine is a bit of production and live performance combined, you will have to really work the machine to get what you want out of it at first.

I was debating between Launchpad and APC20. I decided to buy an APC20 as it has a set of sliders too which is good if you don't have any other equipment. Or you can get the APC40 which also has like knobs and things

Wow. Quick answer.

Ok I'll try and answer this as best as I can, me being so tired and such..

I have 240 dollars in the bank, I'd rather not spend all of it.

I want something that can be connected to a computer or laptop and used as live play; pushing the buttons and making drum beats and music sounds and all that. Like what the artists I mentioned in the OP do.
The Push is $600? Jeez, that's ridiculous. Why is music equipment so expensive!

For making drum beats something like the machine will be what you're looking for, however the machine will be far out of your budget. I suggest looking at the AKAI MPD26, its a drum pad and its got some sliders and knobs you can mess around with. It costs around $200 depending where you look. The launchpad could work too but I don't believe it has velocity sensitive pads and its more suited for live sequencing.

I'm thinking of buying the push, gonna go all out with it, but it's getting released in Ableton time (i.e. "whenever"). Then again, I'm not really impatient. Not really willing to preorder that thing either. Eh, time will tell. Maybe they'll release it and it'll crumble into dust after the first pad is pressed. Gotta wait for reviews.

It released to an unprecedented demand early in march. Because of this they are still back ordered, stores don't even have them in stock yet as they are still delivering to all the ableton direct preorders. I imagine it'd be more available by mid-late april.

I'm going to reply to this thread as well, as of late I've been considering diving into something a little fun like a launchpad as well, since I'm completely empty in terms of knowledge of what I'd want exactly, I'll just explain.

What I honestly want to look for is something that would play both drum beats and synths/samples loaded onto it, there is NO limit to my price range by the way, I have managed my money well enough to indulge. Any suggestions?

Please forgive me for my stupidity on the subject.

The kid wants midi controllers to do the things decks can't.

Do you want it to sync up with a computer, if so definitely check out ableton push. If you want standalone than an MPC is what you are looking for, they come in many forms with prices from hundreds to thousans.

If I could sync it up with a DAW is what you mean, absolutely if possible, does the ableton push only work on ableton? I have FL, so I'd take it I'd need to look for something FL compatible?

I'm basically looking for something like the novation lauchpad that Madeon was using, in that sense.

You should strongly consider switching to ableton if you want to do what that kid does, its the only program of its kind. Push will work just like the launchpad and then it will do so much more. Push can work with other DAWs, just not to near its full extent, it will come with a lite version of ableton too to get you started.

Mmmm, I'll strongly consider Push then, I can always get a cheap version of Ableton if I need more features for my Push if I do decide to get it, I'm not quite jumping in to buy it yet, but the thread was here so I figured I may as well set my sights on what I probably want to get.

Thanks so much for the information 4th.

the top comment brings up the most important thing
"140$ on amazon, skill not included."
whatever you pay, don't expect to suddenly become madeon by just owning a launchpad/push/whatever.
