Awesome. I was wondering when the next album would be announced. I'll be joining again! Can't wait to write some new music :) I'll be releasing music under my newly claimed artist name from now on, however.

It's a good start, but there's allot wrong with it.
The first thing that really struck me was the flute. It's sounds like it's got some high-frequency static (if you're using Sculpture, I'd blame it on that). Try an Equaliser.
Secondly, there's allot of pitch clashing that goes on, mainly with the flute against the other instruments. (I think) it plays the same thing throughout the whole song, but it really needs to shift with the chord progression.
I think you could also soften some of the mallets, and check their tuning. Things get hectic around 2:35. (and I really think you should be wary of sculpture - It does strange things and it sounds like your using it allot).
At 3:20 there are some particular clashes between the multiple melodies - don't be afraid to change them. Repetition is good, but not at the cost of sounding discordant.
Also, I'd be careful with your bass drum. That thing is LOUD. How did you make it? :)
And yes, I am unable to give positive feedback other that "That's nice."

Stuff

I'd agree with DXsmiley on a few things, first being the need for a chord change on what he says is a flute. Sounds more like a chinese Dizi, or some sort of synth to me but I could be wrong so we'll call it a flute for now. :P

Also when something kicks in at around 1:24, it sounds like everything gets thrown out of time for a second or two, maybe just check that. :3

Definitely doing this! Last album was an amazing experience, and this time will be even better (if such a thing is even possible)!

Also, can't believe that I haven't yet seen Lisa's letter until now. The term "liquid pride" has never been more appropriate, haha

Just started working on mine yesterday. Finally, I can use all those samples I bought :D

Edit: Uploaded a new version with what I think are better levels.

I hope you guys like the idea. I haven't decided on the EQ quite yet, and if I'm going to keep the djembe or not, but heck. I just rushed to get the idea out of my head anyway :D

I thought that the djembe was actually a really nice touch, but it only really could be "heard" in a few places, so it could be a little louder (or have two layered to add a bit of width to them without adding as much volume)

Also, I feel it needs a little something to fill out the lower end. The djembe can make some fairly deep sounds so you could use that. (Idk how good your sample is, but on a irl djembe, deeper notes reverberate a lot more than the higher ones, based on how close they are to the edge of the drum ring, so you might want to add another layer to play the low notes and add a reverb to make it sound more natural)

All in all, I really liked this. I'm excited to see where you go with it.

Cool, thanks! Yeah, I still need to do a lot of EQ'ing. So far the only thing I've done is making sure that the rhythm guitar wasn't obscuring the lead guitar. Since it's mostly a mono mix (I'm loving the mono mix), clashing frequencies are even more apparant than usual.

And true. Adjusting the bass is usually something I do last, because of the nature of my room. The way I'm set up in my room makes it so that the bass frequencies especially aren't portrayed correctly, and I'm too lazy to go down into the living room multiple times to check the bass levels (reality checking), haha. There's a bass guitar in the mix, but it's hard to hear. Should fix that in the next itteration :)

The djembe actually has a pretty deep bass to it, but I haven't quite balanced the levels yet. Also, I layered the bass djembe sound with the snappy sound of a kick drum to make it a little more beefy. But yeah, low end is always a problem in my case :D

W00t! I've been waiting for the the next big charity album! I'd participate in other events but I'm just so busy. Luckily I will be graduating, (or failing) in April so after that my schedule is clear.

I think everyone will agree that these charity events provide great opportunities for us to grow as musicians. I know I grew leaps and bounds with each iteration!

Any plans for album art? I'm doing a trio of album covers for a publishing assignment. Two are spoken for, but I think I know what I want to do for the third :)

I can work on Album Art as well; I like doing them in my free time.

Also, this is the basic idea of how I'm going to start the song. After this I'm going to try to do a slight melodic build-up, then do a M4sonic-esque drop into a more fast paced and 'dancy' style.

Yo InC, should we be using public links like soundcloud to share works in progress, or would you prefer we use something more private like dropbox?

Sure, you can definitely put your WIP publicly on Soundcloud. We can't upload full songs on Youtube before release because it would dilute the album into a compilation of old tunes, but anything less widespread than that isn't an issue, we're not going for complete secrecy, this a community-driven album after all!

The drums in the background don't seem to follow the beat of the rest of the song. Also, I really don't understand the high-attack synth you have going. The rest of the song is using mostly acoustic elements, and then it just comes in and drowns out everything else. Like the drums in the background it just doesn't fit - and its so loud that it gets rid of everything else. If it was background it wouldn't be as bad.

Same thing with organ thing you bring in at 2:15, it doesn't fit. Once you bring in the portmento synth a little later it works okay, but even then everything sounds really discordant (Especially when you get rid of the drums!)

This needs quite a lot of tweaking. As it is now, there doesn't seem to be a lot in the line of coherency or underlying themes. The first thing I'd do is either replace the high-attack synth or decrease its volume by three-quarters.

Sorry for taking so long to respond to the earlier feedback. Been really busy these last few days :(

DXsmiley wrote:The first thing that really struck me was the flute. It's sounds like it's got some high-frequency static (if you're using Sculpture, I'd blame it on that). Try an Equaliser.

Will do. The "flute" was made in FM8, btw.

Secondly, there's allot of pitch clashing that goes on, mainly with the flute against the other instruments. (I think) it plays the same thing throughout the whole song, but it really needs to shift with the chord progression.

Something I planning on doing. Thanks for it pointing it out, though.

I think you could also soften some of the mallets, and check their tuning. Things get hectic around 2:35. (and I really think you should be wary of sculpture - It does strange things and it sounds like your using it allot).

Tuning? You mean the velocity? Also, not a single instrument in this track is sculpture. It's mainly a combination of FM8, Absynth, Massive and Kontakt.

At 3:20 there are some particular clashes between the multiple melodies - don't be afraid to change them. Repetition is good, but not at the cost of sounding discordant.

Same as the chord progression, gonna change it pretty soon.

Also, I'd be careful with your bass drum. That thing is LOUD. How did you make it? :)

I disagree on the loudness of it, but I still appreciate you mentioning it. I didn't actually make these drum sounds, it's layered mix of different drum loops.

Camsy wrote:Also when something kicks in at around 1:24, it sounds like everything gets thrown out of time for a second or two, maybe just check that. :3

Don't know what you mean here. What "something"?

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Note on track: made in less than 4 hours by me improvising layer after layer, so that's why it's as jumbled as it is

I personally like the slow attack synth. Although, I think you need to spend more time mixing and arranging the song. I think you got a good base, but you need to develop the song more, and create more movement.

Had a some spare time and a stroke of brilliance(?) today. Completely composed the melody and wrote the lyrics for my song. Now I have something worth working with, I can spent the next few months making it sound half decent. :P
