Current / Ideal Career

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

I've been a professional Lifeguard for almost a decade now, but since that's seasonal and I graduated last year (BS in Graphic Design) I've been full time delivering pizzas to pay rent. It's not exactly as rewarding as saving a person's life, but free food is nice expense I no longer have to worry about. Plus I love to cook so its fun to help out on slow nights. Heck, I've even taught some of the newer kitchen guys how to do their jobs better than the old kitchen guys.

I thought Graphic Design was my dream job but while I loved the work I hated my classmates and teacher at both schools I went to and now they would be my coworkers and bosses who would suck the fun out of the job. I doubt I'll ever go into it outside of occasionally freelancing. 6.5 years of tuition down the drain... Oh well.

I have no idea what actual career I'd like to have now. I've learned more about what I definitely don't want to do than what I'd actually like to do. There's a part of me that wants to live the childhood dream and be a rock star in a huge band but the realist in me knows I could never actually cope with fame. That said, music, especially playing it live, is probably one of the few passions I actually have and is not something I ever plan on giving up. The best I can come up with for now is to move someplace warmer and lifeguard year round during the day and play at bars and open mics at night. We'll see where life takes me though. I'm in no rush.

Currently running my own business as a freelance software developer. Going great, making a lot of friends and valuable connections. Money's good too. For now I wouldn't want it any other way.

If I were to speculate though, I'd want to run a SAAS on a larger scale with a phat office in Berlin, Germany.

My current dream, which I have had for a long time, is to be part of a research team in Antarctica. Not kidding. I have a boner for science, so I am aiming for a degree in physics or geology and see where that takes me. I have also been gradually developing more of an interest in IT, so that's another thing I'd like to do.

As for a music career, no. I don't want to make a red cent out of making music. I will never charge anybody for downloading my music, and I do not want to get signed with a record label. First of all because I believe that if I went down that path, making music would cease to be about anything but money, which would spoil the fun (which in turn would spoil the quality,) and because getting signed would in all likelihood restrict my artistic freedom.

I disagree with this second statement. deadmau5 is signed, and he very much enjoys what he does and doesn't do it (at least primarily) for money (although he has a fuckton). His music has definitely even improved since he started his commercial career (compare Professional Griefers to something from earlier in his career). deadmau5 also has released songs of a wide variety of genres since his signing (Professional Griefers, Raise Your Weapon, Strobe, and Superliminal are obviously very different, yet they're all recognizably mau5), and continues to do house because that's what he likes doing.

My current dream career is as a theoretical or particle physicist. Of course, I'd never pass up an opportunity to pursue a musical career, or even a writing career, although I'm not particularly experienced in literature.

I don't mean to derail here, but yeah, that's something I've always admired about Joel, he really just does what he does because he likes it. He doesn't go out of his way to try and please anyone but himself.

Anything that involves music, really. If I can't ever make a music career I'll probably go into computer software development.

Going for a computer science major, would love to work in some sort of software engineering. Programming things like synths ideally, but I'm not too picky.

Music is and will remain a dedicated hobby.
