Current / Ideal Career

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

I forgot to mention, doing something in music would be really legit, but it's not my dream job, nor is it something I expect to make a living off of. It's more of a hobby, one i'm super interested in.
My goal is to be capable of making any kind of music that strikes my fancy, and do it well.

So no one else (at least that shows up regularly/on this topic) wants to go into the social sciences? I feel so alone...

Well, some members of my family strongly reccomended that I consider psychiatry when I told them I'd be studying music in college; it was sort of in my nature to figure people out and help them deal with their problems. Psychology, sociology, and anthropology interest me as well, but I'm not sure if I would consider careers in them. The closest I'd get to the last two would probably be as a musicologist in a researcher/professor type position; I like to get into the nitty gritty of the who, what, and why in music. Physics (especially astro-physics) absolutely fascinates me, but who doesn't think incomprehensibly large space things are cool? I could see myself acting, and in another life I might have had my eyes set on Broadway. I wouldn't be averse to film/tv/radio in a director, writer, or personality position. I had also once dreamed of being a novelist, but I don't think I have the patience for that kind of thing.

Currently I instruct at a middle school as a brass tech. Technically I'm employed at a music store but kids don't seem to want lessons these days. I'm trying to find work at the high school level; as maybe the brass or visual head of a marching band program. I'm also going to school for my teacher's credentials so I could direct at the high school level.

I don't think all of that is what I REALLY REALLY want though, my dreams are sort of like this:

1) Songwriter/performer for a decently lucrative project/band. What kid hasn't dreamed of being a rockstar? I guess I'm still a kid because it's what I really want to do above everything else, but at least I'm old enough to work towards it now. It's just hard to make strides without money, a band, and decent connections.

2) Professional performer (either freelance or as part of an ensemble). I picked up the trumpet when I was a kid because I heard a guy play the Final Fantasy victory music on it and thought that was totally awesome. I kept playing it because I found that performing was fun and, holy shit, something I was good at too. These days though, landing gigs in commercial or classical settings is probably harder than getting off the ground with your shitty rock band; you have to be perfect AND know people. Hasn't stopped me from working towards this too.

3) Professional composer (for a Studio/freelance/for funsies). Writing is fun! I'd like to make money doing something that is fun and challenging. This isn't #1 dream job, but damn I would be happy if this was my role in the industry.

I know that at my heart I am an educator, but I don't know how I feel about the classic teacher/professor position. Maybe one day I'll be able to sit at a desk and feel at home, but I'd like to get my feet wet in the industry before I can say I have something worthwhile to bring to the next generation.

e. for all the younguns in here (I'm lookin' at the fetuses and 12 year olds) just go out and DO things while you still have the free time. I wish I hadn't sat on my ass and played video games for ~18 years because I would probably be in a much better position than I am in now to do the things that I want to do.

Speaking of things that you want to do, it's VERY likely that that will change, which is why it's important to DO SHIT and then decide what's for you.

Currently I'm in school studying science. In physics we just came to waves, and guess what, I already knew dat sheit :D lol

Its not realy a job, and I dont get payed for it, but I'm a trainer at my local judo club teaching/ training kids around 7-13 to fight. (Its not actually teaching them to fight. I like saying it like that) I plan to do that as long as I can, but not as more than a hobby.

My dream career would be designing/ engeenering/ building audio equipment. Either I wanna work with the electronics behind synths and amps or I wanna work with work more around acoustics, designing speaker systems and such. I'm actually thinking of doing my year 3 project (its like a final project that's supposed to take a year of independent work that shows you have learnt something the past 3 years) either designing and building a synth or designing and building a hydraulically powered sub woofer (like the idiot bass head I am).

I wanna be play games for a living.
Going into detail, I want, more than I can express, to work at RoosterTeeth. Preferably in the AchievementHunter offices, though I love acting, film production, voice acting - y'know, that general area. I'm already working towards my goal of having two years of film production and editing so that I can work there pretty much when I'm fresh out of school.

There are plenty of jobs that "explore the world", depending on how you define explore/want to explore the world.

If you want to explore the world through discretionary travel, think about international business, diplomacy, teaching (in international school or ESL) or engineering (oil and mining to be more specific). These jobs, especially if you follow the right career paths, often place you right in the middle of of a foreign country (well usually the capital or the nearest large capital). From your homebase, you will have opportunities for regional travel both during your vacations and often for your job.

If you want to explore the world directly through your career, look into something like working on a shipping vessel/cruise ship, freelance writing, gold digging or being a diplomatic courier (that's an example of this sort of job. Most countries have something similar).

A nice thing about a lot of these jobs is that you can find one that fits your interests. Studying sound engineering? Go work for a cruise ship (or get a deal with a major band. Roadies can travel a whole lot, both domestically and overseas). Really like rocks? Become a geologist and work for an oil/mining company. Interested in the study of other cultures, past or present? Anthropology and Archaeology. Want to help people? Work for something like the Peace Corps or an NGO.

I'm 29 and I work as software engineer.

My ideal job was audio engineer, and I've been one for 8 years, before the studio went bankrupt.

Now I'm not sure what my ideal job is.

From what I've seen in the past 8 years, someone making a living off music is rare.

I have general ideas of what I want to do, but the question always comes down to are they sustaining? I would not mind having an average paying job and living in a soundproofed apartment writing music as a hobby. I'm resigned to knowing that I will probably never make money off of music. I play trumpet but I don't practice nearly enough to maintain a high range (the most important part) and I enjoy technical stuff a lot more.

I either want to go into some sort of graphic design, architecture, or technical/electrical engineering. I like hands on stuff that requires creativity. At this point I think I'm going to lean towards the engineering stuff. But soo many choices I just can't make up my mind (Junior in HS so I guess I still have a little time).
