Advice Wanted [WIP] First "something" ever.

Postby Howlgram » 04 Nov 2011 21:25

Hey everypony.
i just rendered my first snuff from ableton ever. So it is not a big deal.
oh well, tell me what you think, and if you have any suggestion that would be GREAT. please? ^^

So, just a midi, basically the only thing that i know to do on ableton is to record midi. (So i recorded it by parts, and struggled to put them together, lol)

I like the way it seems offbeat. The Piano thingy is very unrealistic, not sure if like that. The stringies give a nice ambience, I like that.

Nice start bro ;) Not sure about the bit 15s-20s but apart from that a nice ambient tune.

Thank you ^^
What's up with the 15-20? what do you think?
probably the tempo, or is it something with the melody not fitting? :P

well the soundfont is bad, but gives some sort of ambiance and probably that is why it sounds like stringies :P. (dammit, i need more VSTs >.>), i will probably change it for a piano-realistic, and add strings (if i want to finish this sometime). And atm i got no idea what the strings should be doing on the song, like what is the purpose of strings, so i can make strings that go with the song, not something that sounds like apart from it. If someone had advice on that, i would ~yay~ =)

The offbeat might be because i know NOTHING about making melodies and stuff, so i did different parts for the song and then forced them together with a couple of chords or something. If anyone had any advice on this i would be more than happier. And also because apparently as i dont know how to play piano, im not good playing on the pc keyboard either, how lame xD

Really mellow and ambient... really needs more length to sink into what it does tho. XD Sounds much nicer than my first attempt at music.

Experiment more with the image of the sound, what speakers they come from and the like. A stero imager would be great to tinker with if you got one.

Apart from that keep working at it and make it longer. You can do this. Believe in the pony kinama who believes in you. *hugs*

Have a good day!

^ thank you a lot! ^^

something i noticed, is that i cant seem to find/see any measure lines inside ableton, and that is a killer, i just see one straight long thing where i cant seem to get anything in tempo, lol. I guess it is just a matter of realizing about it (done) and now i gotta look up where the measure thingies are, also i believe part of this problem is because i should change BPM instead of adding shorter notes (ha! like if it was a staff).

oh, and the metronome, is just totally useless to me, lol.

This might help you a bit

Once you figure out how to change the grid and stuff you might be able to get things in tempo. Pretty much everything I know about Ableton is from that tutorial plus some experimentation from clicking around. I know just a bit of the basics like adding MIDI clips, editing MIDI notes, adding VSTs and soundfonts, etc. I've had it for about 2 weeks now but if you have any questions just ask away and I'll try my best.

I actually like the synthy piano sound. And the progression in the beginning is awesome.
