The hugging/venting thread

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

<rant>

Well, what I mean is, I had a few musicians from here in my Skype contacts, and asked each one for input and (excluding those who weren't online) only a couple of them seemed friendly. Same thing goes for the forum, as well. I did post some reviews for people but a lot of them seemed to be ignored.

I actually left the "scene" a while back, and I decided just recently to give it another go, to see if I stopped seeing it as either sellouts or people trying to keep others from topping them.

EDIT: Nope, just kidding, I'm staying gone. I just read a thread with someone complaining about new people mucking up the forums while simultaneously wondering why there aren't any "hardcore" music producers joining any more and all I know is rage.

</rant>

Anyway, thanks. I'm so glad I got that off my chest.
I'm gone, and not coming back.

I guess I'm really incapable of making music, because whenever I make something that I like it's not very good to a lot of other people, I guess. I suck at sound design (and I'm hoping that the sound design class I'm taking online helps, but I'm a tiny bit skeptical), and my composition is only meh

Well, my problem isn't exactly that, it's that whenever I link my friends on skype to a WIP for them to critique, they always rip it apart. Don't get me wrong, it's great when they do that so I know where to practice and stuff, but some of my friends don't know how to mannerly critique, which even though I'm glad that I'm getting critique, I'd appreciate it if they didn't just say "your sound design is shit" and instead said "your sound design could use some work". I've contemplated asking that one friend to try and critique with more of the latter mindset, but I'm afraid that he'll bitch at me or something.

To be honest, yes.

I can't kind of pinpoint it, but I do try and help others out as much as I can (I feel that's my purpose in life) and sometimes I feel I don't get much in return from the community - like making album mixes etc. Maybe it's because we're all sacrificing our integrity on our music for more commercial approaches simply to be known more. Then, once we're at the top, we do what we want. It's like that with radio broadcasting. Commercially is the only way to go in this world, and it's something I just have to put up with.

Also, the music industry overall is VERY corrupt.
I cannot make music at all.

I can mix very well. PM me if you want me to mix ANYTHING. However, college is sapping my spare time at the moment. MLR is a once-in-a-blue-moon thing.

Just played a basketball game. WORST REFS THAT EVER EXISTED.
So one sided and biased. They don't know half of the game's rules, and gave the other team the game. We had a 12 point lead, and they start calling bogus fouls and only calling them in their favor. It was almost like they just wanted to see a close game because that's more entertaining for them. End up loosing by one point in overtime. Other team is a bunch of tools who act like they played so well and are the coolest thing since sliced bread. Not sure how many of you play ball, but I'm sure someone can relate...

I'm in love with my best friend. She likes me a bit, but not enough to mean anything. She has a boyfriend now, anyway. /abbrv. story

On that topic: I'm thinking about asking out a different friend, but I'm pretty sure my male best friend wants to do the same. If we don't kill each other over this, there may be a God after all.

Commercially is the only way to go in this world, and it's something I just have to put up with.
.

Sadly a lot of what this is is people who've tried hard at getting to where they are and then they focus on their efforts and any close friends they've built up. I'm sure as they get more "famous" they begin to see people want to occupy the time they don't have anymore do to life and school. "Can you listen to my wip, can you get me stems, can you hear my track, can you answer my questions, etc, etc". While we thank them for all the great music they give us it does often cause a disconnect from them in the community in this way even though they "lead" it. But yes they begin insulate themselves away and keep to themselves or hang with their close friends. If they aren't on MLR or group chats they are still part of the community of course but just REALLY loosely compared to a lot of the people on the bottom. That's frustrating but that's the way it is.....At least these people could respond to pm's and emails after you send it (I have real problems when people won't bother to respond). Some people take a month to respond or not at all. Others are quick, friendly, and awesome people.

They're all individuals.... and some don't respond to any brony "ideals". You have to consider that just because we're all bronies doesn't mean we all act the same or believe in how to act. Some see this as a career and that does mean making money to fund their own efforts and get paid for what they do. That can be selfish depending on how you see it and how much they give back. Many people in this community are just young teens or adults and yeah you're a bit more selfish during that time. You're often emotional, confused, and not assure of yourself. Maturity isn't something that's built in.

It's important to recognize when people make efforts to be friendly and responsive or to support the community. I run several blogs that are community driven, I spend loads of time on MLR, done a few interviews with brony musicisans for BMD, tried to get EQD operating fairly on MLR discussions, and I've been involved in organizing several community albums (Sori 52 and Second Chances) and all these efforts suck my time away from music (which should be my first priority and do ME the most good). Does that mean i get the recognition i deserve? Likely not but that's not why i do it. I do it because at the end of the day i feel I'm trying to make a difference and represent an ideal of HOW this community should operate and because i WANT to spend that time in a positive manner. PLUR: Peace, love unity, and respect. That is what makes this community better than most i think, even if some people don't buy into that.

The biggest problem i have are just time related i just can't squeeze our anymore time i have w/o giving something else. I'd love to hang out in chats but they are time wasters, I'd love to keep in better touch with people I've worked with in the past but we've both moved on and some were real casual relationships. I'd like to collab more but people often don't come through because their schedules stop them from doing so. It's really hard to find a balance between life, self, and community. We are all SO busy. Community is often the thing that goes out the window first i think for other people. As time goes on the people i know more closely are the ones no longer on MLR. MLR seems to be full of fresh new faces that i don't know and don't know me. I will say know who your friends are in this community and hang on to them through thick and thin as that is where "friendship is magic". That's when you have people who will have your back and be there when you need it.

Hope this textwall makes sense. It's rough but that's how it is. It's still better than elsewhere for the most part but people are people.

I've developed a severe sleep medication dependency and I seem to be starting to develop alcoholism. Also I have severe ADHD and am doing horrible in school.
Add on that I'm only a Junior in high school and you wind up with what SHOULD be a big mess of emotional instability, if I wasn't trying to repress my emotions.

Am I doing this right?

I love this thread. It's great to share things that hurt us, it reminds me that people online aren't so different from myself.

Hm, I've felt bummed for years about Lauren Faust leaving the show. It felt like losing a great friend, and it hasn't been the same since. :( I miss the exciting, progressive feel that the fandom gave me when it felt like I was sharing something great with an ever-growing group. I've been bummed about that lately, since I bought Season 1 on DVD and started re-watching my favorite episodes with friends. I still love the show a lot, and just like how Lauren can't bring herself to watch the recent stuff, it's tough for me too. /ventingbutalsosad

@itroitnyah I had something sort of similar happen to me. I used to think that what I wanted to do with my life was to be a bassist (or guitarist, I did both). I practiced a ton and I got REALLY good. I got into my dream school but didnt get the scholarship I needed to go, but I stuck with playing anyway, hoping to land a good band that was going places. I practiced more and got even better, but eventually I hit a wall. I stopped getting better, stopped being able to play faster, and there were still a lot of people out there better than me. I didnt know what to do and I didnt know if I would do music or not anymore ... until I downloaded and installed Ableton. I realized very quickly music production was my thing, and the fact that I would never be able to nail that one Van Halen solo at 185 bpm no longer bothered me.

TL;DR: Maybe its not your thing. If it is, you'll know (and then stick with it).

@Freewave Though Im relatively new to this site and dont really know many people, its people like you that really help get me through dry patches. I love dedicated, helpful people. Knowing that all I have to do is put in the time and effort to learn and work to make good stuff and that there are other people out there doing the same that want to discuss and help each other out with it, is seriously awesome. So thanks for doing that. It really makes a difference. <3

You're going for fucking Berklee?? Holy hell dude, good luck. Berklee is pretty much the college that I want to go to really bad, but unless I want have my student loans through the roof when I graduate, I'm stuck with most likely going to East Carolina University.

Once again, good luck. You will forever have my jealousy if you get into Berklee

@colortwelve The audition isnt that bad, trust me. Plus, pretty much everyone who goes for it is scared shitless, and the people who do the interviews know that. I dont know how I was able to play my audition piece, I swear my hands were shaking so bad, but it turned out okay and I got in. Im sure youll be fine, just take a deep breath and remember its not one and done; you can always take another shot at it.
