Who is reeeealy good friends with Omnipony?! anybody?
Because I for the longest time have wanted to see how he makes his Dubstep bass synths. Mostly to just to see what he does to come up with such cool sounds.
Anybody have synths that are either his or sound like his?

experiment mostly with the wavetable "chrome" in massive, should give you similar effects.
Layer it with a more high pitched lazer(a synth rapidly going up in pitch)/synth should give you a similar sound to his.
in this particular song he used a more mid-high synth with some detune on it from what I can hear. :3

I'm going to doublepost to give you this advice, though:
A good foundation for a bass is totally rad and helps, but from my experiences, most of the magic happens in mixer processing. So make sure you spend equal time perfecting each.

Ugh, I hate having to listen to this track though. The mixing is dreadful -.- Anyway, wubs...

From listening, the majority of it is a Digital Waveform in Massive, ie Chrome, Modern Talking, Iron, Arctic, it doesn't change much when you are processing them like this. Stick on Bend+/-, Turn on Phase Modulation for that Oscillator, set filter 1 to a Double notch, with a lot of resonance, filter 2 to lowpass, route 1 through 2 in series, then modulate absolutely everything, the bend amount, the wavetable position, the phase position, the filter cutoffs, use an Acid filter for a more 'wet' sounding wub like in MLC.

From there it's just about making a bunch of variations. The screechy synth can be easily made with a scream filter, modulating the cutoff, maybe stick a hard clipper on top.

Omni uses a lot of dimension expander on his bass sounds, which is a very bad practice. If you want to add width, use the Pan position in the Voicing tab in Massive. Or apply external chorus to a very subtle degree.

If you search out my 'Wub pack' here on MLR, it has a lot of similar sounds pre-made for you to deconstruct.

Lav, I'm curious; why is dimension expander a bad practise? I know that putting too much on just sounds terrible, but I don't see the harm when using it in tandem with widening?

It's basically a short reverb/delay device, and can cause severe phasing issues, as well as timing issues with any syncopated instruments, because of the delay caused. It also sounds horrid compared to simply using unison to add width.

True, but I'd always prefer to use a short reverb I set myself, like Space Designer or Ambience Muuuuch more control over the sound, and I can actually EQ the input.

Dimension Expander is something you should strongly apply the rule of "Less is more". I barely use it tbh.

It also sounds REALLY bad when you add distortion and release a note.

I greatly prefer Massive's chorus effect to the dimension expander, especially the chorus ensemble. If you use it sparingly (i.e. only mix it in slightly), it creates a similar but much more natural sounding effect that makes dubsteppy/reese bass patches much more lively.

Anyway though, this is an Omnipony thread, not a chorus thread. Try using the modulation oscillator in filter FM mode, last time I tried that it sounded kinda like one of his basslines. I think he's got some Livestreams saved if you want specific details.
