Getting stuck mid-song?

Postby Genkar » 13 Jan 2013 18:40

Hey guise, so I've been working on something new, and I had something great going, but I ended up getting stuck like 32 bars in. It sounds great to that point, I just don't know where to go from there. I come back a few times a day and listen to it, it's just that nothing I try sounds right there. I've been doing this same thing for about 2 weeks now.

Should I just scrap it, and start off on something new, and what do you guys do when you get stuck like that?

Describe the problem further in depth. If it's a problem with "The melody/rhythm sounds good up to that point, but then I'm not sure about where to go with it" then you could try backing up a bit and continuing the song from a different earlier point, and if that doesn't work, then scrap it.

Or save it, move on to a different song, and come back later.

I just make a new project. Then I get stuck on that, so I start a new one. After that, I get stuck again and start a new one.

This is why I haven't released anything in a few months. D:

This man isn't kidding. Have you fucking seen his list of WIPs? I cried.
Though, it did help me feel better about everything I haven't finished. I just start things and move on.

7 months since my last song and counting. I have, spot on, the exact same problem. Honestly though, best way through it I've found is to just start putting things. They don't even have to fit at all, they just have to be something. Creative juices don't need a shove, just a little nudge until they start flowing again. Getting away from distractions helps too, I occasionally take a walk through the woods behind my house to clear my mind when it gets real bad.

That's how it goes. Nine volt is correct in saying save it and move on for now. Come back to it later with a fresh mind. I can't count the songs I started and had to put on hold. Some get finished and some don't, but it beats the hell out of getting hung up on one song and getting absolutely nothing done.

When I make music, I tend to do all the composition on the same day. If it's not done by then, it's gutted for parts, thrown away, and the next project is started.

Everything else is a longer process where multiple listens is a must.
