Check my build up,

Postby Strezzkev » 26 Dec 2012 23:52

So got a good new song coming up stuff n all fancy nice nice.

BUT!!! I think I could use some pointers on my build up, I feel like it's a little much perhaps. I could simplify it, but then I feel like it's not enough. build ups for me have never really got me tensed like others do, this is the best one I've come up with so far.

And don't worry, there will be ponies.

Thanks.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread since buildups aren't my best, but at the same time I somewhat understand what's needed.

Toms, just pitch them up and down while having them hit, it works wonders. White noise as well, as much as whitenoise is used so much, it's very crucial for transitioning, your drop isn't that big, whitenoise can fill up alot of space, and yet work for small drops (atleast imo it does).

I also think the rise to the drop is a little too short, but then again, it could work with a happy melody like you got there.

(Final note: I listened to it again for good measure, I don't think you should cut the kickdrum and snare off and let the rising synth sit alone, it leaves too much empty space, bring something back in before the end of the rise to add flavour)

ah ok, I'll try and put the stuff all the way through, should the rising synth be shorter then? or start earlier with the build up?

Now that I think of it, the rising synth is fine where it stands, it's a matter of filling up the emptiness that comes in, it feels so unnatural. Your transition period from the start to the rise (@ 1:16) is very quick, there is no REAL noticeable transition, it just kind of happens. That's fine, though, and you do have percussion at the end before the drop. The only thing I could think of that would fit (and bare in mind I am also not the best at drops) is whitenoise for the moment.

Also to add on, the reason I say whitenoise is because you do not want your build up to be TOO big, where when it drops, it makes the next section seem too light.. Your song is very smooth, so you want to be careful with what you implement.

yeah, I'm afraid of making it to extended for something simple,

And I've pinned it down to that's probably the problem, I don't think I know how to start a successful build up.

Well, we all have to learn at some point, maybe wait for a few more responses while playing around and trying a few things out, don't only listen to my opinion.

hmm well i am not so good at buildups n stuff myself but one thing that could work is have a reverb automation thing. so like in the beginning of the buildup, the decay time goes up and the dry/wet signal goes up at the sam time. then at the end, you automate them both to go strait down. or at least the dry/wet signal so that the reverb thing turns off.

and i kinda like this buildup cause it kinda making fun of all buildups out there. the kick or something plays faster and faster and faster. until its like a funky soundin' noise :D :P

Take my advice with a grain of salt as i too am learning how this music stuff works
