Motivation/Inspiration

Postby Random111223 » 04 Dec 2012 23:39

So lets talk about motivation and inspiration.

I've noticed that I have lots of inspiration and motivation when i've had a long break in producing. But it fades away if i keep producing on a daily basis.

At the moment when i get an idea for something, I usually end up creating a 10-second loop, and be like "meh i cant build anything around this" or "meh this and this artist makes alot better stuff, this sux". Then I close my DAW and repeat the same thing when i get another idea. I feel like i have to quit producing for a month to "gather" enough motivation/inspiration to start creating complete songs again. I feel like the more i keep actively producing, the more it feels like a chore. Dont get me wrong, making electronic music is the most fun and awesome thing i know, but anything i do tends to get out of hand, this is obviously no exception. Kinda like eating candy, it tastes good until you eat too much of it.

Has anyone been in the same situation? How long breaks do you guys take between creating new songs?

I've been there, and like you a break is what brought back the inspiration. I have not figured out a way to always have overflowing creativity or a way to quickly bring it back. What has helped in the past is instead of completing songs I instead focused on refining my skills, mixing, sound design, even just building drum kits. I guess I'm suggesting taking your mind off of the 'creativity' aspect of music until it comes naturally, don't force it, do something else. I hope that all makes sense.

Edit: and when I say "do something else" I mean do something else musically.

I haven't been there too often. Maybe for a few hours at most.

But either way I always have trouble focusing long enough to actually finish a song.

My inspiration? Simple. The fact that I'm just CREATING something I have a passion for. Sometimes it's other things, like seeing treetops or something really pretty. Sometimes it depends on my mood, if I'm happy, I'll tend to make something light and agreeable...and not get much done, if I'm angry, I make something weird and aggressive, and I get LOTS done.

It's an age-old problem buddy. =p I especially hate when I try to relate my tracks to another artists.. It makes me feel so bad about where I'm at and what I'm doing. Though, at the same time, that's a good thing to remember for inspiration, recognizing your 'position' (in my case, voice) in music, and finding ways to improve it.

My inspiration at this point is striving to be accepted, musically.
Stop getting "You need to work on this," and working for "You should be on my playlist."
It's also being able to express yourself freely.
As a rapper, it's easy to speak my mind in the tracks that come out my ass. xD
To judge ones intellect seems ignorant in reality.

As a rule, I try and avoid comparing my stuff to other people's music. It tends to make me reluctant to finish a project because I think it's bad in comparison but standalone it sounds fine.
