<original><pony><dubstep/waltz> Waltz of the Crystal Empire

Postby Navron » 07 Dec 2012 11:48

King Sombra needs some musical love, so here's a song dedicated to him.

Waltz of the Crystal Empire

The story behind the song is essentially, "What if the mane 6 failed to save the Crystal Empire?" and chronicles the last chance of stopping him while the crystal ponies are unaware, enjoying their crystal fair. The waltz is symbolic of the fair itself. A foreboding, almost carnival like sound to represent, "the last dance."

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, and as always, any feedback is appreciated. Looking for some final feedback on the mixing before I upload it to my channel.

I love the 3/4 waltz timing mixed with the 'dubstep', its really well done, nice work. The mixing is where the song falls short, kick falls behind too often in the higher energy segments, the snare is kinda boring with the rest of the track, I would give it more energy (more release). You should consider side-chaining more elements to the kick to let it shine through and lead the track, especially in the heavy dubstep parts, even a slight amount (almost unnoticeable) can go a long way.

There isn't much sonic separation between all the wobbles and sound effects, almost like there's reverb clouding it all over make it hard to discern one sound from the next. Again side-chaining could help here and if there is reverb you could consider side-chaining the wet reverb signal against the other sounds. Also making more drastic EQ differences from the wobbles to the risers to the melodic synths will help that separation.

Like clockwork 4th. Like clockwork :)

I side-chained my kick and snare to the basses and lower freq. instruments, but totally didn't think about doing it to the higher freq. ones.

Thanks for the feedback. It sucks doing this on detachment and not having stereo monitors or my car :(

I'm glad to help :D

I know that feeling, I have to use headphones at my school all day and I always can't wait for when I can go home and test stuff in the studio. I guess you just learn to make the best of it and when your detachment ends you pump the stuff on your studio monitors.

Sweet jesus this is so cool. The idea of mixing waltz and dubstep is really cool as well, I like it!

This track is sick. I love the little samples interjected here and there at certain intervals. I guess I was kinda waiting for it to revert back to waltz but that one transition was wicked nonetheless.
