<WIP><non-pony><original>LutariFan - Snowflake (need help)

UPDATED: I'm kinda happy with the main part now. Now what I REALLY need help with is the transitions.

UPDATED AGAIN: Done with the beginning and end! I think I'm nearly done with this one!

Hello!

So, I'm a pretty new musician, have made some "meh" songs. But for this years Christmas, I have decided to step it up and make something that's actually good.

BUT. Here's the problem. I don't have enough experience and such to make it good... Therefore I thought I'd post my progress so far here, and ask for some advice on how I can improve it!

Important note: I'm not the best with musical terms and such, so if you write "Oh, just do this at that place to make things good", please tell me how I can do "this".

So please give some feedback on anything you find bad sounding or out of place, or something I can improve! :)

Well there are 2 main things you probably should learn. Music theory and music technology. (Now im assuming this is your first time dabbing into composing music. i could be wrong though)

Music theory is all about the notes, and the chords and harmonizing all that musical stuff.
Music technology is all about the MIDI and the compression and the audio effects and the mixing and a lot of stuff.
(i dont mean to insult your musical knowledge by saying this, im actually writing this for myself because i aint so good a musics :P )

So for this song i thinks it sounds good thought it doesn't sound like a christmas song much. I think the reason be is because often, Christmas musics have a singable melody. with this you are kinda saying the same thing over and over again till it changes, kinda like some sort of dance or pop song.

also just a little tip thing, try to use more 8th and 16th and quarter notes and such so that the rhythm is constantly changing.

plus a little thing you can do is listen to Christmas songs and see why they sound the way they do. Try to replicate them by listing to them over and over and try to play it on the piano/guitar/flute/banjo/arp2600/whatever instrument you play, and try to incorporate those same elements into your song. For example, maybe you hear a pad in the background or maybe they use bells and whistles or maybe they have a soft wind at various parts. i dunno. its like a puzzle. gotta solve it with some clever thinkin'.

hope this helps!

I think it sounds really christmas-ish actually. I showed my music teacher the song and he agreed. So I guess we have different opinions there.

Or do you mean the first or the second part? Since yea, the first part I don't think is good at all, but the second part, before the drop, I believe went quite good. Maybe I should just scrap the first part and start the song with the second part.

Also, I have been trying to get a bell sample, found one, but I have no idea where to find a sfARK decompressor for Mac.

yeah i definitely agree that the second part sounds more Christmasy but i think the thing that is making me say that it isn't too christmasy is because the main melody is stuck in a minor scale and not fluctuating to major and stuff. idk Christmas music is hard to make.

Oh and what DAW do you use? Cause if you be using Ableton i could show you how to get a bell sound with operator. :D

ooo yeah! i like that second part a lot! kinda sounds like a dance/rave Christmas song. AWWW YEAHHHH!!!!

i think earlier i was kinda heavily criticizing because when i think of chrismas music i think of singing and trumpets and piano and stuff like that. didnt really think about making a electronic dance christmas song. i r so dumb :P lol
