Progressive dubstep?

Postby Pewter Robot » 14 Nov 2012 18:44

Seems like Kromestar's the only one who does it. Well the only one who does it well (go away, Mount Eden).
This is what I'm talking about:

I could listen to any of these song on a loop forever. So why don't more people experiment like this? Seems like he's the only dubstep producer who does stuff this revolutionary (and it still goes unnoticed).
If there is anyone else who experiments with artistic, original dubstep like this in the fandom, or even anyone outside (not Inside, heehee, song references) of Kromestar, do post.
I always enjoy doing something until I have to.
Good thing I'm supposed to be doing stuff other than music.

I wouldn't really call this dubstep. It's more just dub. There's really no step involved at all.

It's not dub, dub is a form of reggae. This is Post-Dubstep.

Kromestar was one of the pioneers of dubstep. He's renowned among the fans of original English dubstep. He's also my favorite musician ever, but that's irrelevant.

I see what you mean. Why did dubstep have to lose it's mellow artistic feel and just become about making wacky midrange synths?
Well I'm pretty much done with this site (it wasn't about the April Fool's joke I actually loved that). If for some reason somebody wants to contact me or something (not like any of you even care lol):

It never lost that feel. That feel just stayed in the underground, while the new stuff became mainstream. So it seems like it's gone because it looks gone next to the other stuff.
This dubstep is still very much alive. Kromestar still does tours around the world, and Get Darker and Dubstep Tube still push the classic stuff.
Kromestar sometimes blends that mellow artistic feel with wacky midrange synths. For example:

Dubstep is an outgrowth of dub, though. As dubstep goes, this stuff is much closer to dub than to the 2-step garage side of the dubstep spectrum. And it's certainly nowhere near bro-step side of the spectrum. This is what I mean when I say it doesn't really have that much "step." Maybe moreso than pure, classic dub, but that could be just as much a product of it casting off the reggae instrumentation and chord progression as it could be because it's actual dubstep.

The beat is way too garage-y to be dub, with all the hihats. Dub has a very empty, subtle beat, if at all, and uses more bongos. This music doesn't have the high-feedback delays of dub. And the bassline isn't a steady progression like in dub; the bassline in the first one much choppier than any dub I've ever heard, and the other two don't put much emphasis on the bassline at all. Not to mention the delayed chords, the ambient splashes, and those weird percussions. I consider this dubstep.

Like I said, that's not necessarily suggesting 2-step influences; it's just dub losing the reggae instrumentation and chord structure. I'd rather say the hats and such are more house-influenced than garage-influenced.

He's my favorite musician ever. He's actually the first dubstep I ever heard.

Gotta say, you have good taste in music. I'll have to add 'mellowy dubstep stuff' to the list of styles I need to try, right next to gabber and jump-up :D
