New and seeking help :)

Postby FadedSilhouette » 01 Nov 2012 03:41

Ok, I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this so move it if needed.

Anyway, I've been trying to produce music for almost a year now and my skill at doing so has increased very little since I started. The main thing being I've learned that if I want a certain sound to stand out more turning up its volume is not the proper means to achieve that more often than not. I've kept my stuff to myself 'till the other day when I decided to make a youtube account and upload my most recent song. I also thought it would be entertaining to send it to EQD to see what would happen being that it was pony related. The response I got from the comments in the music of the day post on EQD and on youtube was a bit mixed. (The only disapproving comment on youtube was just that ricksatan guy and I've seen him post on a few videos so I deleted it) Now I don't expect to be some world famous producer but I'd like, for a change, to make something that sounded good and others thought sounded good too. I've read through a fair number of the posts here and have watched many tutorials on youtube and the results of all that is basically just what I know now, most of the stuff on here saying just keep practicing and I'll get better and youtube just repeating the same tutorials over and over. (Long sentance is long XD)

I apologize for the story and appreciate it if you read the whole thing but now to my reason for this post. If someone is willing to put the time in to help me improve my production skills that would be amazing. I know some people can easily learn just from written tutorials or videos but I tend to learn better from an actual teacher and since there are no other producers where I live, that I'm aware of, I figured here would be the best place for me to find one. Unfortunately, I don't exactly know what genre I would like to specialize in, the ones I'm kinda of leaning towards are trance and electro house but, being that I'm such a newb, I hardly know the basics behind those. The DAW I use is FL Studio Producer Edition which came in the signature bundle so I have a handful of stuff like sytrus and maximus but the only other VST I've purchased on top of that is Toxic Biohazard however, I am trying to save up for Massive. (It's hard to save while paying for rent, internet, insurance, etc. while only getting $11.25 an hour XD) I have thought of going to school to learn this stuff but it's not exactly affordable at this point in my life. I know a lot of people use Skype but I don't have one yet so if someone shows a genuine interest in teaching me then I can set up an account.

Again, I apologize for the big post and if it's in the wrong section I'm very sorry. If you want to here my song this is my youtube page:

I'm honestly not trying to view whore (if I was I would embed the song XD) it's just if you want to hear it. Let it be known that if no one wants to teach me I won't quit making music. It's something I do 'cause I enjoy it and it helps me relax at the end of the day so don't feel guilty if no one wants to, I'm aware that people each have their own lives. :)

Thanks for reading and I hope I didn't bore anyone to death. /)

Don't worry, you are posting this in the right place!

If you're looking for people to teach you and help you improve your music production: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5447

Also, if you have specific questions or needs regarding music production, you should feel free to ask any of those questions here on MLR so that people can respond if they like.

You have FL Studio? That DAW is seriously one of the best for electronic music production, in my opinion. You could try to save up for Massive, but Sytrus is actually one of the best synthesizers I've ever used. You might not need to spend your money on Massive.

And as for the genre that you'd like to specialize in, I love trance and electro house, but really you should try to make the kind of music that you enjoy the most, whichever genre that may be.

I for one don't find much help in tutorials either, as the vast majority of them are for people who are just getting started with certain aspects of production instead of for people who are trying to improve. So I encourage you to search the threads on the Technique section of MLR for some helpful advice; I've found plenty of help on here just from searching previous discussions. And once again, there are some tutors on here who are willing to help, hopefully.

Also, feel free to post any of your songs or works in progress in the Music section of MLR so that users can listen to it and give you feedback if needed.

Alright, so I haven't seen the video yet (mostly being that I'm on my school laptop, which has youtube blocked. I'll get around to watching the video when I get onto the main computer), but...

Music theory, motherfucker. Do you know it?

lol movie references. Alright, so as stated above, music theory is perhaps one of the most important things you can know for music production, unless you're going to be making the type of music that plays on radio stations, in which case you only need to know how to make proper drum patterns. I'll assume that you already do know music theory, but if you don't, there's no need to be ashamed, this place can teach you all that you need to know about music theory. And if you need any more help with anything involving music theory you can just skype me (djitroitnyah on skype) or pm me on here. This also applies to anybody in the tutors thread above.

Another thing that you may or may not need work with is synth design. I'm sure that you're plenty fine with synth design, so you won't really need help with this section, but if people were complaining about your synths, then feel free to find some people with adequate synth design knowledge.

Also, don't feel demotivated if people tell you that you need to work on this or that or whatever, you aren't an expert, neither am I, or the majority of the people here, and it can take years to get really skilled in music production. Flux Pavilion spent 10 years in music production before he got signed. Alex S has been producing for 7 and still hasn't been signed (although there are speculations and rumors that he has, or has been very near to getting signed, and that's why he hasn't posted anything in a while). I'm going to assume that it's an average of 4-5 years in music production before people start getting good enough to get signed.

But anyways, enough with me blabbering on. Good luck with music! Have fun with it too. Also, from the post, I'm assuming that you got featured on EqD? Lucky. Good job with that. ^_^

Alright, so after reviewing the song, you can pretty much ignore most of the stuff I said =P You're doing awesome by yourself, and I don't think you have anything to worry about.

A few people on this board have come to me in the past to hear my judgement on their songs, I used to be more involved in the music section of the forum but recently (and in the foreseeable future) have not had the time to help out there.

I do love helping people and with my time restraints I would rather work with someone who is seeking for the help then blindly deal it out to every post in the music section.

PM me if you wish.
