Music Texts

Postby MasterOfRegret » 01 Nov 2012 00:04

I was at the library the other day procrastinating on my homework by looking through the very small, music section at school. I picked up the book, "Introduction to Contemporary Music - Second Edition by Joseph Machlis and signed it out. I read a couple pages and discovered that the second edition was made because the first was commonly used as a first year college text. Anyway, the book great, it's not dull and it is intellectually stimulating.

I was wondering if you have any physical books on music; theory or musicians or even a list of children's songs, as long as you recommend reading it?
[Also I think this is the first time I won't be able to finish a 600pg book in 3-4 days, way too much homework.] I'll try to find any books after I'm finished this one. I'd prefer to have a physical copy rather than one on a webpage because I can't carry my computer around all day.

Yes:

Arnold Schoenberg - Theory of Harmony
William E. Caplin - Classical Form
Deryck Cooke - The Language of Music
(Coming soon to my bookshelf) Heinrich Schenker - Harmony and Free Composition

There are also a few more that I either don't have physical copies of and/or haven't read yet that I would still recommend, and there are a few that I have physical copies of, have read, but would not really recommend.

I don't have any recommendations of my own, but I'm very interested in checking these out!

I have a music theory book somewhere, simply called Music Theory and then I have The World Encyclopedia of Musical Instruments by Max Wade-Matthews.

I found that the guy who wrote Music Theory for Computer Musicians has all his books online, for free. What.
