Problems With Naming Songs

Postby Nine Volt » 26 Oct 2012 22:39

Anyone else have this problem? You finish your song just fine, then when you go to name it, your mind completely blanks. IDK if it's just me, but I always have a lot of trouble naming a song. I have an entire note on my ipod full of song name ideas, but I somehow never end up using it and coming up with a name on the fly.

For example, Starstruck and Chains were not names I intended to use. They could have been Antinova and Magic Eater, but noooooo.

So basically anyone else have more trouble naming a song than actually making the song?

I actually think of the name first and song second. The song kinda grows out of the name for me.

When in doubt, try to refer back to the material that we're all inspired by - ponies. Think of the mood of the song, and what it makes you think of. Then, think of a scene from the show in which that mood or atmosphere was expressed best. Try to name your song about something from that scene, and if possible find relevant cover art as well. The final step is to LIE and pretend that you were inspired by that scene from the very beginning.

I believe you mean a lexicon!
I'm hilarious because I used a synonym to name a book of synonyms and words.

Know dat feel
Usually I name my project files random names like "Upward wallker" or something random like that, intending on comeing up with a better name when Im done... But then I end up nameing it either the same thing as the project file.
Sometimes I start looking for a lame pun, like Painbow factory was an idea for a remix of Rainbow factory, then I ended up nameing it "The pegasus device [THE CHAINSAW!!!]" or something like that...
Blah blah blah, Its a good thing I keep seriousnes at a minimum in my music! I dont think I could name a song something serious!

I don't like saving text documents or whatever as "ranndome song idea" or "4/4 jam lol", I like them to have actual usable titles so when I go back to them I remember what I was going for. Sometimes that means coming up with a theme on spot, and I might improvise some lyrics or whatever to give me something to work with. It's hard for me to go anywhere with a song if I don't know what I'm trying to say with it; whether or not it actually includes lyrics.

I have the same problem. While I'm working on a track I always come up with a ton of names, and end up using none of them and going with one I come up with right then.

It's sort of like when I come up with something good (no matter what it is) I always try to forget it or make myself think it sucks and come up with something else later, just so I don't have to stress myself with trying to remember it. (Mitch Hedberg said the same thing about his jokes once.)
I always enjoy doing something until I have to.
Good thing I'm supposed to be doing stuff other than music.

If it's non-pony, think about something that's been happening in your life that reflects the mood in the song, and then sum it up in a few words.

If I have no idea for a song name at all (which is rare, since I always start with the name first, then build from that) I try to think how it makes me feel, what sort of place it reminds me of, what scenario would fit it.

For example, I named my track 'Runaway pony' after it was finished. It's other name was 'Underwater'. It made me feel like I was... well, underwater, and at the same time like I was a lost pony in the middle of a forest clearing, at night. So yeah, my "technique" is to imagine a scene that goes with the mood of the song.
(And that's exactly what Aftermath said. Kinda...)

You have a talent. Also inb4 someone makes a song about sex with Rainbow Dash and names it that.
