The 40-Second Song Challenge!

Postby prettiestPony » 22 Oct 2012 12:08

No, not making a song within 40 seconds... I'm not that crazy. ;)

But! I challenge you, MLR, to create a complete, reasonably satisfying track that does not exceed 40 seconds! (Reverb/delay tails can extend into the 41 second range, I guess, since mine kinda does :P. But the majority of the sound should be gone before reaching 41 seconds, and the tail should be no more than 41 seconds and 999 milliseconds, 'kay?)

The ideal is a track that feels like it was meant to be that length, rather than sounding like something that was prematurely cut short.

WHY, you ask? Several reasons!
1. Does a music piece always need to be two to ten minutes long? Variety!
2. Challenge yourself!
3. Because it's only 40 seconds long, it will take less time to create than larger scale tracks. Maybe. Depending on how you do it. So, you can totally squeeze one of these out even if you're busy with other things!
4. Because Woona!
Image
(Your argument is invalid)

Maybe it could be turned into an album eventually? If there's interest.

Semi-arbitrary deadline is November 23rd, AKA Black Friday, AKA the day after Thanksgiving!

Here's my example/submission, using an odd kind of style I've been exploring lately. I admit up front, I don't think it is necessarily the best example of a satisfying 40-second track. So you should make something better! :3

Just FYI, this idea's been (sorta) done before. The album was called "A Dash of Insanity." The concept was to make an incredibly fast song that was under a minute.

That being said, this is reasonably different and I'll probably make something for it. =3

Oh, dang, no, I didn't know that.

But yes, the point here isn't to make something insanely fast.

:/
And here I was starting a one-hour compo. I may submit it, since it isn't over 40 seconds long and I like this idea.

Done! 39.65 seconds of sound, two seconds of silence.

In case anyone cares, the title is a play off of Tiesto's Maximal Crazy.

Nice! Thinking I'll try this over the next couple days. To tide you guys over, here's an atonal 12-tone piano piece inspired by Schoenberg that I wrote a few months ago which coincidentally fits the confines of this challenge: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/90384230/Klein ... rstuek.ogg

Ooh, I love it, Nikki. :3

Grace Note: Uhhhhhhh, why don't we say November 23rd, AKA Black Friday. No real reason behind that specifically, other than... something symbolic about consumer culture...?

There's my attempt. It feels like an excerpt from a longer piece of music though :/

Yes, please do! I'm planning to too, myself.

I don't think I'll have any limit on submissions. Maaayybe on the number of final "accepted" pieces from one person, but that depends entirely on whether it does become and "album" or something like it. :P

I'll work on this Fri/Sat/Sun.
Liking the idea though because I cannot crank out long pieces.

You, sir. I have no idea why, but your song "Equestrian Paradise" is one of the catchiest things I have ever heard.

That was completely unrelated to the current topic, but I just wanted to put it out there.

Well, thank you! I wrote it (as I do half of the songs I put into FL Studio) on piano. When I write that way, I'm not worried about theory. I just play whatever comes out. I should do that more often.

Here we go. It's piano. And drums.
I don't know how to make anything complicated given a stopping point in music lol

I like calm music just as much as hard. And I liked your track too. Very soothing.

That was beautiful. Just... beautiful. Music doesn't have to be complicated to be good. Though the end was a little abrupt (I think).
