Heavy Metal Guitar help

Postby PonE-Sharp » 22 Oct 2012 23:22

I've been looking for a long time for some good Heavy Metal Guitar vsts, with all that chugging goodness, and they're either hundreds of dollars or complete crap. I know a lot of people use Amp plugins and effects to create distorted guitars, but do you just put those on any regular electric/acoustic guitar to achieve that signature Metal sound? And what settings would I need to tweak on the amp to make it sound decent? I'm a complete newb to guitars and amps.

Also couldn't figure out if this should go here in Technique or Sharing Is Magic.

Ok but how do I use it? I went and played around with the knobs and it just made my guitar sound very low quality and 'poppy'.

Um... Go on KVR and research into some amp and distortion plugins. Then go and learn about how to use a guitar amp, how to make guitars sound decent in your recordings, and learn about guitar recording and mixing techniques, how and when to double up sounds, how to isolate lead parts, where to place elements in the stereo field, and how to use effects without causing conflicts when putting your song together? Finding the right VST to make your guitar sound how you want it is only about 20% of the work involved.

Will most certainly do, thanks!

It goes without saying that if you wanted any real guitar on any piece, there are a number of guitarists that would love to play whatever you give them. That being said, it's tough to find good and quick collaboration partners who'll play what you want, so more power to you!

I use Fl Slayer 2 for unplugged guitar sound, and run that threw NI Guitar Rig 5, and then I never looked back XD! Sometimes I'll layer Slayer 2 with a synth in Massive so that the signal that goes threw Guitar Rig will have more body.

SO it's not the ultimate solution but it gets the job done. The main reason why I prefer not to use sampled or pre-amplified electric guitar VST's is because I prefer to tweak the sound myself so I can get a particular sound. Pre-recorded electric guitars rob you of that versatility, and versatility is what electric guitars are all about.

Now that said, a pre-recorded electric guitar VST is a valid quick fix. Also, if you want to learn how to create electric guitar sounds from the ground up, prepare to spend A LOT of time practicing it and getting it right. You will even need to study how an actual electric guitar and amp works, and some of the tricks guitarist use to get certain sounds, because digital amplifier effects like Guitar Rig 5 will resemble actual guitar amps in functionality. Some people would say guitar tone is an art in itself. I really wish someone would make a really good and tweakable unplugged electric guitar VST to use with digital amp effects.

Now even that said, really, the best solution is to go buy an electric guitar and amp and learn how to play and record it, or like what Warbalist said, collab with a guitarist.
