Would any of you be interested in this?

Postby MeMark2 » 11 Oct 2012 14:50

Alright, so I had this idea for a system that some people may find beneficial and thought I'd ask if anyone would be interested. I looked around and the closest thing I could find was the "Tutors" topic in the Technique board, but that's not exactly what I had in mind. Before I explain it though, I want to let you all know that I've never done anything like it, so any and all feedback for this idea would be highly appreciated.

-What is it?
A buddy system designed to have partners encourage each other to work on a consistent basis.

-How does it work?
If you are interested, you get paired up with a buddy with which you will set a weekly time to meet (online) and work on individual projects. You may work on any project of your choosing alone or with your partner. The only rules are that your partner must know what you're working on and you must know what your partner is working on so that you can encourage each other to get at it.

-Why do it?
The reason I thought of this is because I am terribly inconsistent when it comes to music (or anything really) and I really wish I wasn't. I have a tendency to procrastinate everything so hard that I can't really get anything done at a decent rate. My mom suggested that I find a sort of "study partner" to work on stuff more consistently with, since having someone who is counting on you to be there makes it harder to ignore. I don't have any friends or family I can ask to help me with this, so that's when I got the idea to bring this up here.

-Who it benefits most.
If you are like me, if you wish you could be more consistent with your projects, and think that having someone to encourage you who is also counting on you to encourage them could help you, then maybe this little system could be of use to you.

Please do let me know what you guys think of this.

Not a bad idea, actually. I'll definitely pay attention to this thread.

I think a lot of people do this through skype chats and making friends on there but its certainly a great way to put out a "help wanted" and pair up with someone who too would like some 1 on 1 help. Best of luck.

I also agree, I have a tendency not really to fully procrastinate, but more or less just let an almost finished project sit there.. So procrastinate.

I have fond memories of early 2012 too.

I just hope season 3 kicking off will bring a vitality back to the community as I see all these projects mostly stemming from boredom, a shortage of ideas, and a glut of artists.

honestly it seems like you people find this a job and look for ways in order to make your job interesting

making music by itself should be interesting to you, if it isn't, I would seek other hobbies.

Just sayin' ^^

I think you severely misunderstand some of us.

First off, the process of making music is not the only enjoyable part. Some of us enjoy the fruits of our labor just as much or even more than the process of making music itself. This is very true in my case. Although I don't dislike the process of making music, listening to a finished song after countless hours of refining it is one of the most satisfying feelings I get in my life.

Secondly, some of us see music as more than just a hobby. Some of us want to really get far in music but that's not easy and requires some sacrifices. Not everyone wants to go that far and that's okay, but please keep in mind that some of us take music much more seriously than you do.

Lastly, some of us have problems. When I said that I am terribly inconsistent at doing pretty much anything I meant that I find it incredibly difficult to do anything that isn't playing video games or browsing the internet. My problem is so serious that I sometimes forgo eating because I'm too lazy to find food. In this scenario, it doesn't matter whether I find music interesting or not, I'm probably not going to get much of anything done.

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm attacking you, but your comment felt like you were dissmising both my love for music and the seriousness of my problems, so I may have overreacted.

Anyway, there is enough interest in this idea (and need on my part) for me to actually go through with it, so I will probably make an actual post for it either later today or tomorrow.

I think this is a great idea. It helps you finish what you start, make new friends, ect.
I don't see why not.
And as for "why make music if you don't enjoy it", I have to agree, making music isn't always the fun part. It's what you accomplish which makes the effort worth it, and if it isn't good, it still helps you do better in the future.

I'm actually fine with that though. Even if you fail, it's far more tolerable than failing on your own. Both "buddies" can help each other out.

Music is fun. Making music in groups doubles the fun.

Please don't kill me for making the "fun has been doubled" reference.

But seriously, working with other musicians can inspire plenty of new ideas that you may not come up with on your own. This is the main reason I love Downlink, Datsik, and Excision so much. They're constantly collaborating, inspiring a whole new mess of robotic noise for each track.

Commandspry, I think you're misinterpreting why some of us want to collaborate rather than work alone. It's not because we're bored, it's because we want to improve and inspire new ideas.

I feel like this could be beneficial for pretty much anyone, but really only under certain circumstances.

I have my own music buddy that I talk to about my projects pretty much all the time, but the thing is we were friends first and we met through a common musical interest. I'm sure being able to talk to ANYONE about your projects for feedback/whatever could be helpful, but I think it would work best if the connection was a little more organic.

Also, what MeMark said resonates a lot with myself; this is more than a hobby and I hope to use this experience to get somewhere someday.

I don't have a problem with working on my music every day (or sometimes every single minute of my life), but I do like the idea of a buddy system for advice, sort of like a mentor thing.
I always enjoy doing something until I have to.
Good thing I'm supposed to be doing stuff other than music.

See, this is where I'm completely different. I love the process of making music more than most other activities. But then I don't really even want to listen to the finished product because my self esteem's so low with my music.
The only exception is the one in my signature. There are a lot of problems with it (and I would by no means consider is a very good track, or even half the best I could do), but for some reason I love listening to it. Don't know why. I guess I just love some of the synths (even though I hate that horrid kick drum).
