Guest-hosting a radio show about MLP fan music tomorrow.

Hey MyLittleRemix! I've spent a bit of time hovering around here, and I really love this place as a sort of hub for brony music. That's why I've come to you about this! So tomorrow, I'm guest-hosting a radio show about MLP:FiM and its fan music. It's going to center around the vast electronic genre (as that's the theme of the radio show) but hopefully I'll be able to give some sort of a survey of brony music as well, and show its depth.

So, brony musicians, would you care to answer a few questions? I'd love to be able to quote you on the air. I'm also looking in to the possibility of brief interviews---so is anyone available to call in?

1. When and why did you first start making music?

2. Has MLP:FiM made your music better through inspiration?

3. Why do you think there is such a big music culture surrounding MLP:FiM, in contrast to many other large fandoms?

4. How has the community (i.e, other brony artists) helped to make you a better musical artist?

And of course, I would love to play some of your songs on the air! If you respond to these questions, could you also include a song that you'd love to hear? By you, or by someone else.

The show is 2 hours, from 1-3 PM PST on Monday. If you're in the Walla Walla or eastern Washington area, you can tune in at 90.5 FM. Or, here's a downloadable stream: http://kwcwradio.tumblr.com/listen

1. When and why did you first start making music?

I started making music when I was listening to Camo & Krooked on how they make Drum & Bass, and the production behind it, it absolutely fascinated me, I found out they used FL Studios, and I downloaded it and slowly came into the producing world. MLP and their music community however boosted my inspiration to make music.

2. Has MLP:FiM made your music better through inspiration?

Namely, this site has made my music better. Other than Youtube, I was pretty oblivious on how to make music, thanks to MLR I've learned a bit more on everything, especially how to mix and master, which has as well made me become more devoted to producing.

3. Why do you think there is such a big music culture surrounding MLP:FiM, in contrast to many other large fandoms?

Really, I have no idea, but if I were to say anything, I'd say it's because of 1), the type of people who are apart of the fandom. To explain, the age is a factor, the fact that most are very internet-minded (I didn't know how to word that), and quite frankly, I'll just say it plainly, nerds (Sorry if you take offense). 2) The fact that the show itself is very creative, so in turn the community is as well.

4. How has the community (i.e, other brony artists) helped to make you a better musical artist?

1. When and why did you first start making music?
I started playing music when I was 12, piano, three years, it was ok, then switched to guitar, another three years, was also good. I started making music around 2011 when the brony community first began to swing, also around the time when independent electronic producers began to gain mainstream appeal. I loved Renard and all the strange styles that arose throught the wood work, along with Pendulum and their near rock drum and bass. I yearned to learn to make music like they did. Before this, around the same time I picked up the guitar, I had picked up a synth. It was only after learning about bronies did I learn that electronic music was mainly made on DAWs, and I quickly learned why.
2. Has MLP:FiM made your music better through inspiration?
Yes, in the sense that the community surrounding it was very helpful in teaching me how to make music. The show itself is helpful in that it creates huge remix contests simply by existing, with each new song creating a race in who can put their spin to it first.
3. Why do you think there is such a big music culture surrounding MLP:FiM, in contrast to many other large fandoms?
Because of the show's own music and flair. While it's true that the fandom started from one post on /co/, when the show hit youtube, it was exposed to a large population of YTPers, remix-er's and just general musicians. From YTP, the productions just got more elaborate until we just made music.
4. How has the community (i.e, other brony artists) helped to make you a better musical artist?
This community has been the most helpful, most insightful group of people I have ever conversed with. Everyone is friendly and cordial, and gives nice but fair feedback. You have people here from all walks of life and every level of talent grouping together to create new and exciting music. We've created a collective of all sorts of artists, working towards not just making pony music, but also making sure that the next generation of music is going to be absolutely amazing.

Oh wow. Well I'll be off work tomorrow so I'm available for a call in, but with my bland and monotone voice, its probably best I just listen hehe. I'll tune on the radio since I live in Maryland, literally next door to DC :P

Also, I'd love to hear this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmNDsaTB3yo
Whenever I'm practicing mixing either in front of friends or by myself, this remix just find itself in the mix. You just want to get up and dance! But if you choose to play anything from me, it'd sound pretty cool to hear this played: http://soundcloud.com/dj-kayinkento/b-b ... other-best
The only trance track I've made so far where I managed to get the sound I've always wanted.

1. When and why did you first start making music?
I first started making music when I was 10. My brother actually got me into making music after he got a program called eJay Dance 5. After messing around with it, I ended up deciding to stick with making music. Although as time went on, I lost interest in making music and jumped into 2D and 3D design. After going through 4 great years in a community orchestra as a Violin and Violist and started DJing, I decided to start making music again when I was 18, but never really push myself until recently.

2. Has MLP:FiM made your music better through inspiration?
Definitely. Even though I make Happy Hardcore and Trance, House is a genre I can't go a day without listening to. So when I heard SimGretina's remix of At the Gala for the first time, it felt as a challenge for me to get better in my music production and try something different.

3. Why do you think there is such a big music culture surrounding MLP:FiM, in contrast to many other large fandoms?
Because of Pinkie Pie. I'm kidding, I think its because music has a unique expression regardless of how many times people remix the same song within the same genre. Not saying other forms of art cannot do the same, but music seems like the icing on the cake while others such as paintings, sculpture, digital paintings and many others seems to be the foundation.

4. How has the community (i.e, other brony artists) helped to make you a better musical artist?
My family and friends inspires me to continue making music, but when it comes to feedback and what I could improve on, they're not the most reliable. There are other communities out there I could try to be a part of, but it seems like the brony community is more 'on level' with everyone else. Whether its an original track or a remix, related to MLP or not, I can usually always count on someone to let me know if there's something I can improve on, and the same goes for me critiquing someone else's music and providing something that will hopefully help them improve.

Sorry but I have to ask: Breeze...are you THE Breeze? The one who remixed Tell You a Secret by Azure?! This guy?!?! (http://www.djbreeze.co.uk/)

Haha, no, unfortunately not. I go by Breeze for my pony music (or the one song I've released, at least) and for my art because my last name is Breeze.

Thanks so much for your awesome responses, you and everyone else!

Ah, heh my fault. Meh, probably would be best if I just remained a listener. I'm only now just jumping into the brony scene so I'm way too new to be on a radio show. Yeah, ignore my entry :P

1. When and why did you first start making music?
Started about 9 months ago because I saw a tutorial on dubstep (old school style) production from Boyinaband. I really liked house music, so I thought that I should try it out, and I did, and here I am now.

2. Has MLP:FiM made your music better through inspiration?
Indeed. The brony community as a whole is just so inspirational and generally helpful, it really helps to have so many wonderful people out there. Plus, the fandom is very creative, and that really helps people (or maybe just me) with inspiration. Obviously I don't want to copy people, but fanfics and the like are very useful when coming up with themes.

3. Why do you think there is such a big music culture surrounding MLP:FiM, in contrast to many other large fandoms?
I think it's mostly because the show has songs in it. Something like Star Trek doesn't have songs like Smile in the episodes, and plus it's a cartoon about ponies designed for small children, so it's easy to make music for :D I'm kinda just making this up as I go along, no idea if I'm right.

4. How has the community (i.e, other brony artists) helped to make you a better musical artist?
As I said in question 2, the community is very helpful, creative, caring, and for the most part will actually listen to your songs, because many of them aren't much bigger than you (in terms of fans of course). That's not to say they aren't better, but just that they haven't been discovered. This fandom does have a problem in that there are so many musicians that it's very hard to get noticed for making music even if your stuff is very good. People like Tomb, Glaze, and all them will probably remain in the 'upper tier', whereas many of us on MLR will probably remain in the middle unless we get lucky. This is all speculation, no idea if it will remain that way forever (hopefully not :D)

1. I had been playing around with Goldwave, messing with other people's music for about two years when I finally started getting into FL Studio. It was just sort of a logical progression for me, I had fun playing around with music so I thought I'd start making some myself.

2. As in the show directly influencing my music, not so much. But the community has directly inspired a lot of what I make - hell, I named a song after Kyoga and am considering making a sequel to it. But I don't find much to latch onto in the show that's not so loaded that every other brony and his mom are going to make something inspired by it, and I like to cling to the illusion that there's still such a thing as true originality.

3. Because of Daniel Ingram? FiM has amazing music already, and when the 'OGs' of brony music stepped up to remix it, and proved themselves to be damn good at music themselves, it was only logical for a massive flood of aspiring musicians to try to follow in their footsteps.

4. The community around here, especially those who participated in the first Lesser Knowns album with me, is probably what keeps me showing off my music. I can trust TLK to give me feedback, and every now and then I'll nab a new subscriber on Youtube whose name I vaguely recognize from around the forum. Add to that that the higher-ups like Alex S. and Lavender Harmony are so insanely technically skilled and readily willing to give advice, and you have a community that's pretty naturally built upon helping each other out with improving their craft, and thus continuing to put out collectively amazing music.
Youtube -- Soundcloud -- Tumblr -- Bandcamp (new album out!)

I can't feel my brain.

1) When and why did you first start making music?
Very relative. A bit more..seriously? Normally, really, in 2009. My old alias is SMRDcompany (which CommandSpry is an anagram of :O ), and because I found it fascinating that I could produce these sounds on any computer.
2) I don't think so, because I'm not any good at it. Surely I have much more and better inspiration but the end product can't improve.
3) Honestly, among other reasons, following the bandwagon. I must admit, when I heard MLP music remixes, I found it really awesome and wanted to give it a shot. I don't really buy "PASSHUNNNNN <3 <3 <3" explanations.
4) Very interesting and informative, too bad I can't use any of the info. Nonetheless, good community with good advice.
