Help with Breakcore

Postby Frostmourne » 07 Oct 2012 16:27

I've been learning to do different genres of EDM, and one I've been really interested in learning is Breakcore. I love the drums that Breakcore incorporates in the various songs the genre has. Some artists who make Breakcore/Breakcore-themed music are Venetian Snares, Dormouse, and Nero's Day At Disneyland. The first and the last of those mix Glitch in with Breakcore, and I love the sound it makes.

But anyways, on to the topic at hand: How would one generally make Breakcore? The complicated structure of the drum patterns is absolutely insane, and seems like it would take a month or two just to program them. I'm sure many other ponies would like to do Breakcore, as well, but just don't know how to start, just like me.

Its a sped up breakbeat genre. There is no single pattern for breakcore.

I would recommend starting with a DnB -esque drum pattern at 180 bpm or higher. Your choice. Just make a 4 to 16 bar loop. After that, start messing with the placement of the drum hits until you have a more intricate drum pattern. Also, use two different separate kick drums just in case you want to be even more technical.

This is where it gets fun. Get some sort of glitching VST, or do it yourself. Trigger beat repeat on some snare hits. Reverse a few hi hats. Filter parts at random. Use sidechained gating across the whole loop at some parts. Slice the loop and play it back wrong. Use a granualizer. Just be creative.

Concerning the rest of the song, that's entirely up to you. Make it have some neurofunk basses. Bass growls. Odd leads. Piano melodies. Vocal glitching. Whatever. Anything goes.

Distort a few elements of the song, such as drum kicks. You don't have to, but most "authentic" breakcore does.

Lastly, do us all a favor and mix it properly. Nobody wants to hear a muddy mess. Each element of the song needs to stand out, with the snares being the "main attraction".

Pretty much what he said. I want to add that try sampling drum solos and the like, most famous is the amen break. Even if granulizers work wonders don't rely on plugins too much: it's fun to chop things by yourself and people won't complain ''you used this and that plugin you n00b lolololol''.

Some common tricks are loading a snare in a sampler and changing the pitch chromatically (like in youtube poop ^^) or taking a really short piece eg. 64th note or shorter and looping that creating an extratone thingy.
Holy fuck, it's been such a long time! Thanks all 'yall everyponies! If you're a familiar username on a nostalgia trip, I sincerely hope life's been treating you well. I've certainly had quite a journey! The ride never ends! <3
