Why doesn't the pony community have a record label?

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Does the BMD have a Youtube channel? This sounds like something they might be interested in starting up.

Well we do have http://www.youtube.com/user/BMDSecondChances which has highlighted any promos, interviews, or events we've been doing and i do several of those on my own youtube simply because i have more subs (500+ vs 13). We haven't delved into highlighting smaller brony musicians outside of the Second Chances event we are doing (basically the best of EQD rejects for a given month or longer time period) and the general listing we have on the directory itself (and it highlights brony artists large and small). We've tried be a portal to a lot of the great brony sites out there that also highlight smaller artists or have an independent voice but a lot of those have died out while EQD continues to be the one-stop shop that people support more both in terms of submitting TO and in supporting as a SITE. It just dwarfs the competition.

The sites that tried to do similar things and be an alternative to EQD in some respect are:

http://mlppromotions.tumblr.com which is relatively new (and a lot of people dont submit to) but has the right idea and hopefully a growing audience for a tumblr blog style.

http://www.equestrianbeat.com/ (Which was an awesome site but has lost a lot of its staff and is rehiring currently)
http://www.ponyremixplanet.com/ Was off to a great start featuring new tracks daily and then it just stopped moving pretty much all summer long.
and there's a few other smaller blogs and of course some brony radio stations and general news sites.

I think EQD does feature some new artists all the time and they do a good thing in keeping the bar high and asking for great music and not average quality. That said the're a lot of things i think they could do better and i think there's room in this community for alternatives to them and for supporting the little guy.

Thing is there really isn't a definite second largest site to counter EQD and there really shouldnt be a site that really tries to be exactly what they aim to be as they will better at that. If they are going to try they need to do it in a different way and most importantly they need to have artist and audience support or there's no point to put in the effort if the community doesn't openly support it. There's enough smaller artists in the community who could gain from being better linked with each other (hence why we are seeing some voice a need for a label or for events like Second chances and the Lesser Knowns) so some form of tribalism is not a bad idea that people are going to have to look into to have a chance to help themselves be heard.

Eqd?

Ew....
They don't promote enough lesser known artists... Plus I believe CrashDistorion meant a YouTube channel... I'll set one up if I have enough time

Pardon me? EQD Promotes a heck of a lot of lesser known artists. If I'm honest the more well known artists haven't been producing much lately, and EQD has been featuring mostly new talent. If you don't get on, it's not because you're not well known enough, it's because your music isn't good enough for EQD, simple as that.

It's not necessarily that they don't promote lesser knowns. I think it would be better to have:
1) something strictly music
2) YouTube channel instead of or with a website
3) promoting any brony music. I, for one, do not only make pony songs, as I'm sure not everyone else does. Just generic music by the brony community is fine. It's better to have a strictly music thing instead of something that could get buried by news, fan-fics, etc....

Honestly EQD doesn't need to change its format all. It has a massive audience, people who do get featured get massive jumps in views (generally about 2 to 3,000 views in a week last time i checked), it does feature new artists who get featured with quality music all the time. Again this is geting kind of off-topic from what has been discussed (why aren't there brony music labels). Lets not lose focus plz.
