Melodo - A solution to writers block?

Postby Lavender_Harmony » 26 Sep 2012 15:58

How do you guys feel about this?

Comelody has announced the release of Melodo, which is described as "the first platform for instantly browsing short musical phrases"

Melodo enables composers to rapidly explore countless musical phrases (such as bass-line, lead, and percussion loops) contributed by other users.
Since the composing process is derivative in its nature, Melodo seeks to expose the composer to as many musical phrases as possible in order to build a bank of ideas from which to draw inspiration for new and innovative music.

It's totally free, I might actually give it a go, throw up my own melodies and chord progressions I end up not using for others to use.

Do you think something like this could take music down a blind alley, or could this be a good way to ease the learning curve of making your own melodies, chord progressions and rhythms?

Personally, I wouldn't touch anything like this with a 30 foot pole cause I'm too puristic about music to consider something like that, but I can see this helping people that, as you said, who need a learning curve for composition.

If anyone can figure out what genre this is, please tell me, cause I have no clue. :D

Just like with a lot of things, I think it's a tool that can be abused. It's not a whole lot different than just using preset sounds. Used correctly, it could be a nice way to give you some ideas or just make a quick filler.

Other synths like Zeta+ already do this essentially, so I don't think it's inherently bad, but it could be overused to produce music that literally isn't your own.

I think I may give it a go as well.

EDIT: Why does the file have to be .exe?

personally i feel this would only be helpful for people who know the theory behind whats happening in the program.
if you dont know that, you're basically just letting the computer do the work for you.
I can see this useful for those who, as OP said, need to get over their writers block.
Ill probably try it out.
and as Dabrenn said, its like presets,
you can use overuse, but its not unique,
and it will never match what you can do on your own if you push yourself.

That seems a little extreme

If you use the midi directly and unchanged, then yes it will not work.

you can use as a way of hearing some possible ideas and working with them to find something you like. It's not unlike listening to a song you like, hearing some loop in said song, and imitating something to sound somewhat similar. It's supposed to be used as a idea jumpstarter, not the end result.

I dunno, it doesn't look like of thing I would be into, but I don't think I'm about to crucify anybody if they use it.
I like to think I'm well-rounded because I'm not really good at anything.

Hay guise, wut if we combined this with doktor durm?
And made a program that randomized structure elements and automixed stuff? We could make a machine that creates a new, original composition every single time you turned it on! Then we'll get miku to sing in it!

I NEED THIS.

VERY.

MUCH.

But in all seriousness I think this is pretty cool. Ill have to try it out. A melody sharing program is just as lame as a midi sample pack, but people seem to buy the latter. :P

Would be nice if it could export melodies directly to the FL piano roll for immediate editing. And even nicer if it didn't crash all the time.

Not a fan, but I'm not gonna hate people for using it. I'm gonna go check it out myself right now, see if it's shit or not.

EDIT:
This thing is shit.

Not something I'd consider using - melodies are the one thing I can actually do quite well. Maybe it would be helpful to some people, I don't know.
