<Original><WIP><Pony>Playing in the Rain [Updated]

Postby Habanc » 23 Aug 2012 19:25

So, was watching "Sisterhooves Social" yesterday because I was bored, and Iunno, I just got a huge hit of feels when they were playing in the rain together. Something went through my mind like this:

"... I wish I could just run outside in the rain and splash around like a little kid... *Scrambles to window, peering outside* Why isn't it raining... *Pouts* Come on, rain already! *Sobbing*" I think I was depressed for the rest of wednesday.

But, since it never did rain yesterday nor today, I decided to make a little piano-ambient-house-ish tune about playin' in the rain.

I even tried to make the clap sound likes splashes Yeah, those don't exist any more

(You probably will have to turn it up, as it is not mixed fully, nor mastered at all. I also put it on dropbox because it's supposed to go in an EP, and I don't feel like putting it on soundcloud until it's released.) New version, and it's mixed well and I did some practice mastering on this WIP.

So, please, tear it to pieces! Is the intro too long? Is the melody too repetitive or too diverse? Does the bassline seem too simple? Is the pad too loud, or is it too quiet amongst the atmosphere FX's? Is the subtle kick irrelevant? Stuff like that.

I like it, I feel like the melody should change a bit around 2:40, it gets a bit repetitive. Everything up to that point is great, I really like the pads, and the part at 2:00 sounds like something out of minecraft.

Something is bugging me about the sound of your clap, but I'm not sure what it is. Try playing around with reverb, and the attack and release on the sample.

I also think the outro could do without the piano. It seems out of place. An alternate route would be to change the velocity on the piano so that its softer, and blends in more with the pads.

Finally, I have to say this did an excellent job of capturing the mood of a rainy day. I look forward to seeing this once it's done.

I took a look at it this morning at already beat you to the piano part. ;) The attack has been increased on the bassline-ish piano part, so it has a softer feel to it.

As for the claps... Yeah, I know. I might have to make the sound a bit wetter (lolpun) or maybe even try a bit of reverse reverb to get it to sorta "mesh" better.

Towards the end I'm adding in some subtle strings + slight melody change to eliminate the repetition.

Thanks for the awesome review!

Okay, so new version is up! I replaced the link in the first post with the new one. I practiced my mastering a bit with it too, so if you have any tips in that area, please let me know!

All feedback is extremely appreciated!

Couldn't listen to the earlier version, but I'm taking a listen to this.
This sounds absolutely beautiful. I'm a sucker for pianos anyway, and the ambiance combined with an amazing sounding piano is gorgeous.
Though the piano chords sound a little dry. Try fidling with the sustain or aftertouch wheels maybe. Or reverb...

Thanks! Yeah, I've played with the release knob on the piano to give it some more depth, and it sounds great!

Also, nice sig quote! I prefer the in-game dialogue, "Why not? Something has to work. Once, I dug a pit and filled it with clouds. Or was it clowns? Doesn't matter. It didn't slow him down. To be honest, it wasn't the best idea. And it really began to smell. Must have been clowns. Clouds don't smell bad. They taste of butter! And tears." That was the hardest I've ever laughed in a video game.
