I like to use ambience (wind, rain, rivers, etc.). It helps a lot with filling the "emptiness" of a song that would have just been a "solo" otherwise (That way I can keep the "lonely" sound and have it still be "full"). It's more of a sound design thing then it is music, but it helps the music that IS there to be listened to with more interest and purpose than it would have otherwise been.

Hopefully that made sense, lol.

This is just... beautiful. So beautiful. In demand that you write more.

I heard your Diane song a while ago on EQD, I thoroughly enjoyed that one. Your music is very moody and tells a vivid story, it's absolutely stirring and emotive.

Why thank you. I try to make sure that the story and emotion is more important than the music, otherwise 'Tiara' and 'Diane' would have been filled with unnecessary instruments. I was kind of scared to leave them as solo piano, but I realized that was the best way to have them for what I wanted to show. 'Shy' was all about the soothing, so the choir and violins were mandatory, as was the harp replacing the "background" piano notes.

So, yeah. Rule #1: The story/feel is more important than the song.

Also, another note on how I write. I try to avoid just writing purely to midi as much as possible. I have a midi keyboard hooked up that takes in the impact amount of the notes, so what I do is I play the tune that I want with the right emotional impacts and timings (these cannot be simulated or emulated by computers very well), then after that I'll adjust the sound and timing of it in the computer while trying to preserve the original finesse that I added.

I hate trying to use midi violins because they are almost impossible when trying to capture those impacts and finesses that a violin can produce. That's why I'm trying to learn to play it, so that I can have live violins instead of synthesized. ;P
