<Pony><Dubstep> I Missed You So Much

Since a lot of people are under the impression that heavy bass drops and dirty bass is dubstep, I decided I would try to give people a taste of a bit of older dubstep, and a bit of what I like.

To quote Koopsas, here is what I'm talking about.

"Brostep - Minted in the UK by Caspa and Rusko, eagerly lapped up by American former nu-metal fans and a Tolkienesque creation named Skrillex, brostep is dubstep for jocks, with any lingering meditative qualites elbowed out in favour of relentless bass ejaculations and face-melting blowtorch blasts."

That is what a lot of you guys are calling "Dubstep" and it really bothers me to see the roots of Dubstep slowly disappearing for this new "Brostep" scene.

"Dubstep is the slow, mellow, long tracks that keep the warm oozing sub-bass that you can just lose yourself in. To pair it in with the "newer" brostep is pretty much like pairing Hardstyle music with Country music."

I'm a bit hesitant to entirely call this Dubstep, but I feel it's there.

I generally dislike Skrillex (I only like a few songs he did), but I'm not saying he "killed" dubstep or anything like that. He doesn't make dubstep to begin with, anyways. But people labeling Brostep as Dubstep pisses me off beyond imagination, and SO many people do it :L

I was wondering if anyone in this fandom made this kind of dubstep. Glad to see it is so! I was gonna work on one, it's good to hear stuff like this.

Hi-hats are too loud, but other than that I really like this. Keep on rocking!

Dubstep is 2step garage drums meets dub influences (something even "pure" dubstep as you seem to imagine it like your own track sparingly use anymore) and from there some DnB techniques (like the wobble bass) - dubstep can take any form and still be true dubstep so long as it adheres to those guidelines in some way. You might want to get things in order before you start attacking other musical interests.

Your kick could use a little more subs in it, it's kinda thin atm
Also maybe a little less reverb on the snare (some delay might actually get a nice sound there) - also if you really want the oldschool dubstep sound you should work with layering a clap in there with it.
Also your hi-hats could use laying back in the mix a little, they seem kinda piercing at the moment - also I've noticed a lot of old UK dub hi-hats tend to roll with the really thin, really punchy hi-hat sound - maybe play around with compression a bit there?

As for your sound samples..... wellllll integration could use a little work. Honestly atm I'm really having a bit of difficulty fitting them to the theme, they seem kinda thrown over a bit - especially that "gotcha" at the end, it goes from understanding to..... deviousness? It just seems a bit thrown together in that regards.

Mmm, yes, I never actually said my track was "pure" dubstep, but the idea came along when thinking about why I really disliked the first two MLP episodes, while I was thinking of Season 1 Luna, and while I was listening to a few Dubstep songs (This is quite normal for my inspirations... Most of the times there is some crazy backstory behind what inspired me to make a certain song), and as I said, it was kind of a mixture of stuff.

fuk u bish this iz how i wunted it! Okay okay okay, excuse my stupidity, but seriously, this is probably the most constructive thing I have ever gotten on any of my songs. Seriously, that's awesome, and thanks for that. I also DID intentionally add quite a bit of reverb to the snare, but seeing as you probably thought it was too much, well, I guess it's too much. It was actually my original intention to EQ the hi-hats until they were very thin, but for whatever reason, I had actually done it, but decided to keep it original for whatever reason (Which, looking back at it, big mistake)

I honestly have no clue why I put the "gotcha" at the end, so I can kinda see how that's a bit bleh. But as before, one of my inspirations was thinking back to Season 1 Luna, and this whole song idea came together formed around that. However, I'm not necessarily good at integrating sound samples into my songs (Although it has gotten much better than how it was before), so I can understand you saying it seems a bit thrown together.

But anyways, thanks for that :>

I love the OG dubstep feeling this song has. Glad to see someone hasn't lost touch with their roots. This new Brostep stuff is getting ridiculous.

Also, could you make a purely instrumental version without the vocal cuts? My friend would love it, but he isn't into MLP. He introduced me to dub and purple a few years back.

What you are calling "Brostep" is still dubstep, just like electro house is still house and neurofunk is still DnB
Rock didn't stop being rock when people started using more distortion on their guitars.
Personally I don't mind the brostep label, but it IS still dubstep, just in a different style.

Good to hear that you're not one of the guys who bashes people who like Skrillex for those reasons. Personal opinion is fine. As for being dubstep, I don't really like to get into the whole genre war. I always thought of Brostep to be Dubstep, but a more energetic form of it. I never thought of them as separate genres.
But really, man the genre wars can get annoying. Just go to any youtube dubstep or brostep song, and in the comments you'll see "Fuck, Skrillex can eat my shit," just because they think it's "mislabeled" as dubstep. To me, whether or not it is "dubstep" is dependent on the individual and how they identify genres, but damn... I wish instead of fighting over what section of iTunes it belongs they could just listen to the song and leave if they don't like it...

Yes, I am aware of this, but I get quite annoyed when people label it as Dubstep and act as if it is ENTIRELY Dubstep. People calling it Dubstep while understanding it's Brostep isn't a problem with me, but people that think Brostep represents Dubstep as a whole, well, I don't know about that :/ However, with Electro house, you can still tell it's part of the House genre just by listening. Same thing goes with Neurofunk and DnB, but Dubstep and Brostep are very hard to see that it's part of the same genre just by listening to it. Just read some of the comments on this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIDT27kGjLs
People are complaining and saying "This isn't Dubstep! There's no heavy drop!" (But these comments have seemed to tone down quite a bit since it was first released) and this really gets on my nerves (But mostly because I am one of those people where you have to go with the specific word / meaning for everything otherwise I'll start eye-twitching quite a lot).

I'm terrible at explaining myself, but um alkdgajl okay.
