Speakers/headphones general thread

Postby Kopachris » 24 Jul 2012 19:58

There's probably one buried in here somewhere, but I can't find it, so I'll start a new one. This is where you can share what you use/ask for advice/brag/complain/general discussion/whatever about whatever speakers and headphones you use, preferably at home for personal use, but if the discussion turns to professional use, then that's the thread's prerogative.

I use a set of 5.1 Logitech speakers that are probably about 7 years old most of the time. They still work fine, but the subwoofer rattles a bit if the bass gets too loud. For personal listening at my computer, I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD 380 pro's that I adore. I also just got a pair of Monoprice 8320 earbuds based on a recommendation from Lifehacker. Satisfied so far, especially since they only cost $7. The fit's kinda weird, though.

All I need is the Sony MDR-7506 headphones my mastering engineer friend loaned me :D They have absurd quality, even though they can get uncomfortable very quickly.

I don't really have anything special, just generic earphones. I really need to invest in some nice headphones...

Shitty laptop speakers, and some $15 headphones (which they are surprisingly good for their price, but their far from fantastic)

I also have these big ass headphones that came free with a shirt I bought years ago. I kinda just said "Hahaha these can't be any good!" but I actually looked them up and there was someone who claimed to be a music producer that used them because they were great. Too bad it won't work with my laptop OR my iPhone... It goes in, but either the metal part (oh god what is it called) is too short, or too long. I can't really tell, but I think it's too short. The problem with this is that I'm hearing half the song in the headphones, and the rest is coming out my speakers. So yehahashha

When I'm making stuff, I really absolutely love my JVC HA-RX900 headphones. They're big and ugly, but they're pretty accurate, and super comfortable. I think I got them for around $55, but they're probably the best headphones I've used for monitoring. When I'm listening to music, for fun, I use and love my Skullcandy Aviators. They too are super comfortable, and are really clear in the high end, so everything comes out crystal clean.

Use a pair of Sony headphones, MDR-XD200 and MDR-V600. Of the two, I like the 600s better, but that is as it should be, being the pricier and fancier of the two.

Sony MDR-XD200 Stereo Headphones. There's reasons I would choose a different pair of headphones if I where shopping now, but I'll use them till they break.

Using a pair of Sennheiser PXC 310s at the moment. A word of advice for anyone considering buying the travel series: DON'T. The noise cancellation feature isn't exactly top notch and the wiring's pretty bad considering I had to get it replaced twice in less than a year.

This. The M50s are probably one of the best buys I've made in quite a while, relatively cheap and totally fantastic.

I have some cheapo monitors that sound decent enough. Much nicer than the speakers I used to have, anyway. I can't for the life of me remember what brand or model number they are. For low end I jury rigged a subwoofer intended for the car to my computer. Makes for some house shaking fun outside of production, too. Aaaaand, a random pair of Bose headphones that I bought with a fist full of bestbuy gift cards.

Headphones - BeyerDynamic DT-880's (I don't even notice them on my head, quite accurate and detailed)
Monitors - Yamaha MSP5's (good stereo imagining, great high detail, poor bass response)

ATM, I use some Sony MDR-7506 headphones. They're great, very comfortable. When on the go, I use some crappy Apple earbuds.

Speakers? Really old Altec Lansing GCS100 computer speakers.

I use my Sennheiser HD202 II for everything music related. They can get a little uncomfortable after a while, but I got used to them. I also have some Genius speakers, but I never use them.

I'm usually on a budget when it comes to audio equipment so I never can buy any fancy speakers or headphones.

I use SkullCandy's 50/50 earbuds as well as Skullcandy Hesh headphones and the Skullcrusher ones.

Probably not the best of quality, but it gets me by.

I wanted to buy myself some new Headphones anyway :/

Can someone recommend good Headphones under under 150$ ? Preferably Wirless, because I would like to use them for Movies too :)
I make different kinds of music, often get told that It sounds like something for a Video Game because I make only instrumentals, never had a chance to make music for an actual game. I would love to.

I'm not sure if good wireless headphones exist for under $150. The issue with wireless headphones is that they have to compress the audio, usually quite a lot, and usually on audio that's already been compressed. Good luck, though, and if anyone finds some good, cheap wireless headphones, I'd be interested as well.

Under 150, HD518, I have them and they are cool, they aren't wireless though. You can also try HD280 or something like that

I'm looking at the M50s, though I'm considering either something from the AD series or the Sennheiser HD 518. If you want something good for movies, you're gonna want open headphones with good soundstage.

How /do/ the M50s compare to the, say, AD 700 or AD 900? (Audio Technica)
