I need help with finding scales

Postby itroitnyah » 13 Jul 2012 19:47

alright so I viewed a tutorial not too long ago by nfxbeats on scales, and how playing different scales can effect the mood of the song. So I was just wondering if somebody could point me to a scale that has an animosity type of mood or feel to it. Sorta like in the one scene at the season 2 finale part one where TS accuses changling Cadence of being evil in front of everybody.

Thanks

You're getting more into the application of music theory, vs simply theory in itself.

Here's a great guide that lists all the different keys, and the typical emotional responses of each key.

http://slightcurvature.com/home/wp-cont ... musemo.xls

Included as well is an interval chart, which you can use to build your scales.

Based off your description, G-Minor seems to be the key you'd be looking for, and is described as:

"Discontent, uneasiness, worry about a failed scheme; bad-tempered gnashing of teeth; in a word: resentment and dislike."
DAW: Cubase 6.5, Ableton Live 8
Preferred Genre: Industrial/Trance
Hardware: Schecter Diamond Series Bass, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, BP355 Effects Pedal, Keystudio 49K Keyboard, Akai APC40, Korg nanoKEY2 25k Keyboard

Minor? Scales don't affect the mood nearly as much as you might think. Even the differences in what note the scale starts on are nothing compared to the harmonies you use, the textures, the voicings...

In that example, of the background music where Twilight accuses Cadence of being evil, you get that feeling of animosity not because it's in a minor key, but because the textures play off of what's being said so well. When Twilight Sparkle makes her accusation, you have low brass and snare drum hammering out a deliberate, angry line, mirroring Twilight's deliberate, angry accusation. There are swells, tremolo strings, and other flighty elements as everyone acts doubtful, and then the low rumbles and deliberate, angry lines appear again when Twilight goes off on her tirade.

If you just want a nudge in the right direction, start with a minor scale and lots of rumbly low instruments like trombones. But it also does depend on the melodies you use, how your different instruments work off of each other, and the harmonies you end up using. And that's not something anybody can give an easy fix for.

To add on to what Versilaryan said, which I should've mentioned in my original reply:

Scales and keys are simply starting points. Ultimately, everything you do to shape your song is what gives it the emotional impact you're trying to convey.

Major keys can been used to create haunting pieces. Minor keys can be very happy and uplifting. The list above is just a general guide of what kinds of pieces are typically written in different keys, but it is by no means a rule book or what you should go by.

Awesome, thanks. Then either I am not very good at interpreting what I hear 100% of the time, or nfxbeats didn't do a very good job of explaining. Probably just me though
