Talents and Abilities

Talents and Abilities

Postby thatguyzeke » 13 Jul 2012 00:24

Just a simple thread where you can share what you feel are some talents you have.
These can range from mundane to extraordinary so go for it.
If you want, you can even include things you are just plain terrible at as well.

For me, I seem to be great at listening/giving advice to others about their problems. May not sound like much, but its lead me to possibly being a psychologist.

And I'm horrible... absolutely terrible at anything to do with drawing or painting. I'm limited to stick figures and that's all.

Talents? hmm...

1. Chaotic organization (meaning that I know what is where even though it's a mess)
2. Building PCs from scratch
3. Being sober after 8-10 beers... true story!
4. English; both written and spoken
5. Used to be really good at FPS games, but then my mouse started failing and... yeah
6. I'm never late for anything

My personal issues...

1. Laziness
2. Laziness
3. I quickly judge people (though it usually is an accurate judgement)
4. I always say what I think (might be considered a good value, but not in this world)
5. hmm... oh, yeah, laziness

The illusion of free will is an emergent property of the deterministic system that is the human brain. DISCUSS.

I've always considered myself not to be very good at a few things, but just good enough at a wide range of things. That aside, I'm well out of practice, but I can still play a mean Guitar Hero.

I'm also an excellent dancer, if your definition of "dancing" involves a great deal wildly flailing limbs and exaggerated headbanging than most people's. This only happens behind closed doors, mind you.

Bad at:

Procrastination
Beating myself up over stuff

I've always felt like I've been really good at musical things, ever since I was a little kid.
Besides that, I'm pretty good at TF2. Yeah, there are lots of people who are better than me, but I'm relatively decent.
I also am pretty good at DDR. Going out to an arcade today for that.
Writing was something I had trouble with in elementary school, but I like to think I'm very good at it now.
If I bothered to put any time into it, I'd be a good artist.
Is being tall a talent? I don't think so.
That's pretty much it, I guess.

Legion wrote:Bad at:

Yeah, pretty much the same here. Although I suppose the problem is that I'm just a bit too good at beating myself up, so I do it a lot.
I also have trouble responding to compliments with anything other than denial.
And I sometimes have trouble counting things if there's more than 10 of them. Yeah, that's right, I'm smart.
is this thing on?

Things I'm Good At:

1. Arts and Creativity. Whether it's music, art, building things, or using my imagination, I can usually pick up anything arts related and be decent at it after a couple months.

2. Computers. I build them, and can fix a decent number of hardware and software issues people may have.

3. Skydiving, although I'm currently over a year of not jumping, and have to get myself current again.

4. Driving. Most people compliment me on my safe driving, although I can get aggressive if needed. A calculated aggression if you will. Driving skills acquired through multiple winters in the mountains, multiple times hydroplaning, and many other close calls.

5. Money. I have no debt, use a budget, and have multiple savings and retirement options. Compared to the 70+% of Americans that have debt and live paycheck to paycheck, I'd say I'm pretty good at it.

6. Jack of all trades. I excel in very few areas, but am good at almost anything I put an effort towards.

Things I'm bad at:

1. Swimming. I may be a better swimmer than many, but considering my actual job is being a rescue swimmer, I'm pretty slow. Any competitive swimmer could kick my ass big time.

2. Thinking I can do everything, which kind of plays into #6 above.

3. Understanding women. I am absolutely horrendous at picking up signs of interest.

Good at:
-The technical aspects of music production
-Writing (apparently)
-Making people laugh (most of the time)
-Computers, hardware and software
-Philosophy (i.e. asking stupid questions to make someone shut up)

Bad at:
-The creative and theoretical aspects of music production
-Reading into a situation
-Distinguishing what's apparently not okay to laugh about
-Making any sort of plans

I'm good at progressive metal guitar. Not amazing, but decent enough. I'm getting better at art. I learn quickly. I can kinda understand odd time signatures.

I'm really good at experimenting with music. That is literally most of my music. Just pure experimentation with a certain genre or style of music. It doesn't get me a fan base or anyone who really loves my music, but I feel like I improve every time I fuck up an experiment. I learn from it. Sadly, I haven't perfected any method of music production, so the only thing that I can do is approximate. This means I will likely be a great musician, but not for at least another 3-10 years.

I suck at organizing academic stuff and sleeping. I literally get 4-6 hours of sleep most days. Considering that I'm 15 years old, this is not a good thing.

I also suck at being social IRL. I'm either too shy, too tired, or too depressed to deal with other people.

I'm literally the Twilight Sparkle of brony music production, except I have no really close friends IRL and I'm not very talented.

Heh, same with me. xD

I think my main talent lies in how I use my logic - Once I learn anything I can really quickly apply it in a given situation. Obviously, this has its downsides, I overcomplicate anything technical (as anyone who's ever tried to collab with me agrees!).

Another odd thing is that I have awesome spatial awareness, which is why I'm so good at tennis, cricket, Ju-Jitsu and archery (even though I'm not really very sporty), and why I'm also really good at driving (heck, I can even parallel park and I haven't even taken driving lessons yet).

I can learn anything that interests me amazingly fast, like how I learned to play a keyboard in less than about a week. This goes into writing and things that aren't related to music.

However, I'm horrible at things like the technical parts of making music. It's like I almost completely lack what would be the left side of my brain and the right side takes over everything (not literally of course, it's just that I learn only what I want to really quickly and anything that bores me, I just don't put enough effort into learning more about. For example, I'm really good at things related to math and science, but usually only if it interests me, although I get bored really easily.)
Another thing is that I'm bad at learning from others and taking directions for some reason, but on my own it's completely different.

With that said, I'd have to say my main "talent" is philosophy.
If I had a cutie mark, it'd probably be a dodecagram.
