Starting Drum Sampling

Postby Raddons » 04 Jul 2012 23:12

Okay, I have one teeny tiny question.

So I am going to start that "Drop 100 Challenge" as mentioned in this thread and I figured that I would take the opportunity before I actually start the challenge to actually make some pretty good samples (namely drum samples).

I did just so and was wondering how you guys do it? The ones I did today involved EQing, compression, and a slight reverb (on one of the snares) before I exported them as a .WAV. When I use them in a piece, should I leave them as is, or should I compress them again? or use a soundgoodizer?

That and just wondering what you all do. I'm actually pretty happy with what I got done today :)

i've never actually made drum samples before but i have made "odd percussion samples"
i just left them without effects or anything so people could do what they want with them easier (at least i hope that makes it easier)

My method in a nutshell:

1. Listen to bass music
2. Cut out drum samples from empty passages in said bass music
3. Layer samples acquired in this way
4. EQ like a boss
4b. Put a little bit of bass and a lot of low-mid in your snare
5. Compress into oblivion
6. ???
7. Profit!

I've always wanted to do that, but I don't listen to anything where the drums get an empty passage

there are so many drum samples out there that likely already cover any sort of drum sound you could possibly be looking for...

ergo,

if you're making your own and you wanna them to sound truly unique:

1) record live drum sounds IRL (preferably using something other than actual drums - think "STOMP")

2) go absolutely BATSHIT with the processing chains and experiment. A lil' compression? No. RAPE that snare with compression and see what happens.

My choice resources are Noisia, Downlink, Pendulum, and KOAN Sound. Sometimes it takes a bit of listening, but it's possible to find some really nice, clean hits in their songs :D
