Can't access files in Windows Explorer after using Traktor?

Postby Sgt-Whip (DJQ) » 01 Jul 2012 19:32

I have already posted this on the Traktor forums looking for help, but just in case someone here can help out, or knows another forum I should go to. I know this isn't the typical question, but it is music related:

This problem has happened four times now, and so far I've narrowed it down to Traktor being a key instigator.

Here's what happens: I will take one of my own song files (one that I made, not just any old song from my library), always .wav 16 bit, into Traktor and play with it in a mix session. After I'm done using Traktor, when I go back to check in the folder in Windows Explorer where the file is kept, the folder will not load properly. Only about half the files that are in the folder are actually visible, and the other half never load. The green load bar at the top will get somewhere between 90 and 100%, and never finish, but it never pops up a message with something like "failed to load folder". It just continues trying to load forever.

Here is a screenshot of the problem:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/32026211/Unexpl ... or%202.png

The weirdest part is, this doesn't happen to any of my music folders with music that is not my own creation. When I bring them into traktor, then close traktor and check their file locations, they are fine. They play fine in my standard media player too.

What I have done:
Yes, I have restarted my computer. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have restarted my computer. I have tried refreshing the folder, it does not work. I can get to my files through a roundabout method by using something like filezilla, but that's only a temporary solution. I shouldn't have to use filezilla simply to access my files. One of my friends said it might be an indexing error. I called for technical support from a local computer company. They were completely baffled, and told me that more than likely, the only cause is something weird with the program that created the file. Thus I have three possible culprits: Fruity Loops 10 where the song is produced, Adobe Audition where the song is finalized, and Traktor Scratch Pro 2 where the song is performed with. I'm betting on Traktor because the files have no play problems in WMP, and because this all seems to have started to happen since the big universal upgrade to Traktor Scratch Pro 2. Also, in case you need to know, I use an external mixing setup with Traktor Audio 6.

I have been dealing with this problem by simply deleting the folder and re-exporting all of my tracks. But that's not really optimal. I don't want to have to continually delete and re-export my files or get them off a back up hard drive every time I try to use them in Traktor. At first I thought the recording function was causing the problem, but on this fourth time, the problem happened without any recording done.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?

Is it possible I could have done something weird to my music files when creating them that is causing this problem whenever Traktor touches them? I can't think of anything weird I'm doing with them, unless exporting them at 32 bit into adobe audition for further edits before exporting at 16 bit is considered weird.

If no one here has an answer, what is my next move?

Thank you in advance. I really need the help, because I can't just keep deleting my problem away. If there is any more information required, I will gladly provide it.

Alright, this is weird. It shouldn't be FL or Audition though. The problem seems to be with Traktor and Windows.

Tell a bit more about that. How you get to these files when windows explorer doesn't?

did you try to go to your control panel and show the hidden files? ive never heard of this issue, but this might allow you to at least SEE if traktor is hiding the files

Filezilla is supposed to be used as a file sharing program, to allow you to share you files from one computer to another, kind of like dropbox (I think). In order to find the files you want to share, its file browser has a very similar setup to the type of window that pops up when ever you're prompted to upload a file to the internet. In other words the browser looks like a toned down explorer.

When I look in the "problem folder" with filezilla, all the files are there and visible, and since WMP is my default player, when I double click the files in filezilla, they play in the media player. But this is kind of frustrating all the same because I have to access explorer to upload files online.

Additionally weird: if I go to my files like this: computer>c>users>(my account name)>music>original music and DJ work>lossless
then all the files are visible

however if I enter in like this (how I usually do): go to start menu and select "music" from the right sidebar>original music and DJ work>lossless
Then I get the problem.

I wouldn't consider this too big a deal then if it weren't for the fact that WMP acts up at this too (won't play files, takes forever to load up), and at the time the problem occurs, the C drive also refuses to load in the "computer" window of explorer.

I have done so, and nothing seemed to appear related to the problem. I have also gone to the problem folder itself and unchecked "hidden" and took off "read-only" mode, but the problem persists.

Windows hasn't been complaining about any updates as far as I can tell.

I've also forgot to mention:
Yes, I have run chkdsk. It found nothing.

I have also run Trend Micro and Malwarebytes. They have found nothing.

I feel like I'm in a point and click adventure, and I've gotten myself locked in a room that I could get myself out of if only I had remembered to pick up that one freaking item thirty rooms back.

Moving your stuff on D drive may or may not fix the problem...
But this is waaaayyy too weird. Like Traktor totally derped your operating system or something.

Yeah man I have no idea. I ended up deleting the folder again. The people over at Traktor haven't really been replying to me so I've gotten no help there.

I'll take a look at using the D drive instead. My next plan is to try downloading my own files in flac, put them in a different folder, and see if that still invokes the same problem.

In the meantime, does anyone know of another good computer/music production forum where I can bring this problem up? If anything I'd like to hear some other opinions on what could be happening (short of "set your computer back to an earlier point in time")

Thanks.
