Books!!!

Postby Kromium » 01 Jul 2012 04:49

I'm an egghead, especially when it comes to music production and audio in general. So if you guys have any recommendations for books out there on Music Production leave a post below and a reason why its a worthwhile investment.
I'll start.

I got this book about 6 months into music production... (if you've read my posts I have mentioned it a couple of times) and its really good for a beginners to pros. Its not going to go in depth into software (the DAW for examples is Cubase) and could be argued as outdated but the knowledge that you gain from this book is immense and can be applied on all current software/hardware. The book covers just about everything about dance music... history, synthesis, mixing, mastering, theory, everything down to the cables you use for connecting speakers. It won't tell you how to make that "dirty gritty skrillex bass" but it will tell you how to synthesize a couple of the more popular sounds as well as your very own to start off sound design. I can say its pretty much a bible for music production.

Having trouble replicating those lead brass synths? Why not learn the trumpet? :v

But seriously, you're able to understand written material about sound production? I'm having trouble even understanding the damn fl help guide!

Reminds me that I should dive in to this:

A friend of my dad brought this one to me and said I could have use for it. It has thorough explanations on all things DSP from fancy mathematics all the way to implementing them. Sadly the example programs are written in C instead of C++, because it's quite old book. Still, laws of physics and mathematics don't have expiration date and this is really nice for someone getting deeper in to synthesis and all that jazz.

Best Book I ever bought.

another must-have for any serious trumpet player.

Whenever I read technical books (of any kind) it's often after I've mucked around on my own and I notice an immediate, significant improvement after doing the reading. Usually this is due to a new method the I hadn't considered before. Books can rarely hold my attention for very long however, so I end up just skimming over the majority.

Computer Music Magazine has had a huge influence on my production skills

Image

They have covered almost every topic out there and they all include a plethora of free samples and software (one issue had a full version of Z3ta+!). $20 an issue is a great price for what they include.

Yes, I picked up an issue, and shit that sure did answer most of the issues I had. All I need now is a mixing guide or something.

I remember that trumpet bible back when I still played trumpet.

But now I'm much happier that I go by this instead:
