Sound Designing... Without Oscillators

Postby Kromium » 29 Jun 2012 03:24

I haven't been making any music lately so I decided to sound design with Massive. What I've found out is that White noise can be used for a Dubstep growl... like the stuff in transformers if automated and filtered properly.

Have a listen.

And the patch if anypony wants it... Note that this patch is played 2 octaves below C0... don't know about other DAWs but I used Ableton to play it.

Also... Inb4 White noise is an oscillator on some synths.

white noise is an oscillator on massive too
I was actually doing the same thing yesterday. Got something kinda similar to the intro of Destroy Them With Lazers.
Comb filters work awesome on white noise.

This sounds interesting, probably will be useful when trying to make certain sounds in massive!

Oscillator is basically anything that vibrates, so white noise is basically product of an oscillator...
But let's not go in to that. One thing I once did with noise was filtering it heavily, until it sounded almost like a sine. Slapped distortion on it and got this drifting and dusty square wave sound.
Also you can't speak of white noise without mentioning Majken's Chimera

Everything on Massive works the same way with wavetables if you're going to be picky about that =P

You can do other neat things too though without doing things "typically" - take a filter on massive and turn up the resolution to 100% and keytrack the cutoff rate to make a "Do it yourself" sine wave.
