Where can i find instruments instead of synths?

Postby soultensionbenjamin » 29 Jun 2012 08:06

I like synths but sometimes i would like instruments to play around with , For example i really like what white tail does with the pinkie pie theme where the bridge plays a brass section of giggle at the ghostie and im wondering what kind of vsti performed that.

Edirol Orchestral ($200) is pretty swag. Some other good choices would be EWQLA(expensive, but might get it).

http://www.flstudiomusic.com/ allows you to browse VSTis which are often named after the type of sound they try to reproduce. I cannot recommend any one in particular unfortunately. You're going to have to do some browsing and testing yourself.

Or you could just play around with your synths until you end up mimicing actual instruments :D

If I recall correctly, there are a large variety of synths that accurately model instruments. I know DirectWave is pretty spot-on.

Well, if you're looking for real instruments sounds, you're probably going to be looking for samplers and samples rather than looking for synths. Regarding samplers, most DAW's have their own built in ones, although some prefer 3rd party samplers like Kontakt. Regarding samples, though, I don't really know that many non-electronic ones, so I can't really help you there.

With that in mind, try looking specifically for samplers and samples then, rather than just looking for general "VSTi's"

Kontakt is a good choice, and several other sources (like the Garritan orchestra and Garritan jazz band) use limited versions of Kontakt anyway, if I remember correctly.

Another alternative--maybe not the best, because it's kind of an old, limited format--is to look into SoundFonts. There are a bunch of free ones on the internet, though finding decent-sounding ones might be a challenge. Use something like SFZ to play them back.

Just a reminder that the powerful sampling tool Kontakt is 50% off until July 7th. It will give you real instruments AND other stuff for electronic music.

Look into Kontakt sound libraries for good acoustic instrument sounds, at least I know it's a rather good sampler for orchestral sounds. That being said they're normally rather expensive. If you just want something free check out soundfonts, there's TONS of them out there - http://the-filmmusic-group.deviantart.c ... -224143947 - I hear these aren't bad.

I'm glad you liked the break!

Actually though most of that was done with actual players, the trumpet was all performed by our sound designer for the project Ken - the alto sax was played by Cyril.

As for the harps and acoustic rhythm guitar that was factory libraries that came with Kontakt.
