How do I get "wetter," bouncier, elastic sounds (w/example)

Postby spacebrony » 18 Jun 2012 11:55

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty new. Only been messing around with FL for about two months (less, actually), but I think I'm making progress and I'm having a lot of fun along the way.

What I've noticed recently, however, is that I can't figure out how to get these "wet," bouncy, elastic sounds I've been hearing.

For instance, here's a recent AgileDash song (I love this guy) if it doesn't skip on its own, go to about 1:30:

That bouncy synth on two and four... I love that. But I'm not sure how to reproduce that sound.

This is a little off-topic, but I've tried playing around in Poizone and 3xosc, but I can't really get anything different than the generic electric beeping sound.

So I'm wondering how people manage to get such nice, bouncy sounds.

Sorry for the question--I don't know if it's an easy answer or just a "you need to watch more tutorials" thing.

Thanks!

But to be srs, I'm away from computer right now, (not to mention that I don't use 3osc, I am a Massive addict). Once I get home I'll try to make that.

Wow you guys -.- If you have nothing to say that'll be constructive..

For those kinds of sounds, you're looking at playing with envelopes. I'll be general terms to describe the process, they should transcribe to any synth really.

For this sort of sound, start with a sawtooth oscillator, and you want a pretty much instant attack and a very quick decay on your amplitude envelope. This will give you a very short staccato sound, not unlike those in the track. What you also want to do is have the same or similar envelope on a low pass filter. You can then adjust the cutoff, resonance, and maybe double up the oscillators.

You can also detune them from each other slightly to add a little chorusing, depending on the kind of sound you want. Also adding an oscillator one octave below can help.

You might find this video useful too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFkloBjZfUM

Good luck!
