Hardstyle help?

Postby Rainbowjack » 12 Jun 2012 05:45

Can anyone help me with hardstyle? All of mine sound way to bad, I use Toxic Biohazard for it even though I have Zebra, Z3ta+, Nexus and Sylenth1 (not pirated this time, friends gave me Zebra, Z3ta+ and Sylenth1 and I bought Nexus)

Can anyone help? Mostly with synth making and a bit with drums (if anyone has a 909 kick they could give me I'd love them forever)

Thanks if you can! It's for the Balloon Party: After Party Mix

if you have nexus get the hardstyle expansion its super helpful
also for the kick in my experience the easiest way to make it is with eks-9 and camel phat if you have those talk to me on skype and ill tell you the basics

1.) Supersaw lead (jp6k is great for this, but make sure to dualpan it or something, so it sounds fuller)
2.) distorted kickbass ( 909 kick is in pretty much every DAW, nexus should have it in one of it's drum presets) for pitching, use melodyne or something, if you're looking for a more "jumpstyle" feeling, layer the kick with a short snare
3.) fuckload of swing: example melody https://dl.dropbox.com/u/43557387/Massive%201.mid

Don't use Nexus, it's unnecessary and you don't learn anything from it
Not to mention the majority of hardstyle instrumentation is fairly simple supersaw stuff, you're better off figuring out how to make the sounds on your own - Massive should work fine but there's plenty of other synths that work great.

Just play with layering sawtooths and detuning them
I know the shrieks are normally just detuned sawtooths with the pitch set to an attack envelope

I personally hate nexus and massive for leads. Zebra2, Sylenth1 and JP6K are amazing for hardstyle leads imo.

As for drums I'd recommend getting drumazon.

If you'd rather use Z3ta+2 then find the multisaw waveform. Use 6 oscillators of it and detune every one.

Supersaw.

the supersaw lead is usually two supersaws an octave apart, possibly layered with another two saws, to give the sound more fullness. i find the multisaw waveform ( it's a roland jp-8000 saw in z3ta+) to work best

Make sure to set every wave to "free" as "sync" will cause all oscillators to start at the same time, and make the sound "pop" in the beginning

Speaking of this, I'm having trouble making a distorted kick that sounds good or at least I like.
Any tips?

Magna a lot of people ask me this question, although I get go in depth myself these 2 tutorials will probably teach you all you need to know:

Zany on the basic distorted kickdrum, video is in dutch but with english subtitles.

Elie from Toneshifterz showing you how to do the whole post proccesing magic

Keep in mind there is no set way to create a kick. It's all about experimenting with different types of distortion, EQing, and effects.
