how do I make my drops more punchy and/or intense?

Postby itroitnyah » 09 Jun 2012 19:50

I can make drops in FL using massive, but just barely, and my friend says that they're good, and he likes them, but I keep feeling like I'm missing the punchy intenseness that the really good insane drops have. I'll post 2 samples so that you guys can get what I mean. http://soundcloud.com/itroitnyah/test-drop-part-1 http://soundcloud.com/itroitnyah/test-drop-2
Alright, so I didn't add EQing in the first one because I was sorta in a rush. I've heard that adding in more percussion can make a drop better, although I have high hats on every other and shakers inbetween. So I'm not quite sure what I can do to get better drops. I did use bass booster.

Well to start off with you can make your drops fill up your whole entire sonic spectrum. A thing that some producers do is add in a bit of whitenoise to their drops to take up some space. If you are heading towards that "skrillex" type feel then consider using multiple patches/synths. Another big tip is to add in automation using (auto)filters (if you have ableton) for movement within the "dubstep" basses. Layer sounds too... some of the more complicated sounds are layered with something else like another oscillator or another synth. Work on buildups too and try to make those more intense before the drop.

I think at least double this and it will be good.

But really though, layering is your friend. I usually have 3-4 layers in my drops to make them feel full.

Why is my mouse moving towards the download button for that last one? :P

On topic, I agree that the drops that you've put up sound empty. Layering more sounds on top (whether they're playing the same notes or not) is a good way to go. It may also be because of the drums - they sound in general too quiet (though that obviously depends on your personal preference).

How exactly would I do that? just add in something that goes with the wubbiness or something?

You could try adding more mids, i.e. a similar sound (though quieter) an octave or two up with the same filter automation. A sub-bass would also fill out the sound. And like Kromium said, don't be afraid to add another wobble bass with a different pattern (maybe not at the same time ;) ).
