Vocal Shifting Techniques?

Postby Hirosashii » 09 Jun 2012 23:51

What are some of the most common ways of shifting the sound of the vocals from the show aside from vocoder? The way I have vocals in my WIP song right now is so plain, as I've just added a tiny bit of reverb. I always try to experiment by slapping some effects on the voices like chorus or phasers, but those just sound trashy. I understand that this is a vague question and I apologize for that.

You mean in pitch? Use a sampler. Dead easy.

Not so much. More-so like... changing a voice to sound more robotic-y or something else like that. What other voice-altering effects sound cool and how would I go about doing them? I know of pitch shift, yeah. That's super easy.

Pitch shifter can be nice if you can adjust pitch and formants independently. Autotune with the lowest possible speed settings and non-chromatic scale does well, too.
Very short delays (< 50 ms) and a certain ammount of delay can create metallic effects, as well as a flanger with lots of feedback (similar effect).

Look at vocodex for vocal effects or auto-tuning / pitch changes in newtone as both are in FL studio. Vid's are out there.
